How is emotion illustrated in photography? What makes a picture newsworthy?

  1. The lighting, intensity, and expressions all illustrate emotion in photgraphy. A newsworthy photo is a phto in which represents a stong emotion whether it is positive or negitive.

  2. The reason that some photos are more newsworthy then others is because some photos bring out strong emotions when you look at them. For example, if there is a picture that makes you feel very sad when you look at it, it would be better fit for the news then a picture that people do not have a strong reaction to.

  3. Emotion is illustrated through photography by not only the emotions expressed in peoples faces, but the tones and colors of the picture. For example, a depressing scene may be inhanced by chosing to use black and white. This depicts the mood of the scene being shown and often inhances the general feeling of the picture. A happier or more dramatic picture that wants to depict more than one emotion or trigger more than one feeling may be brought upon by using bright colors and sharpening the image.
A picture is newsworthy because of the story it tells and the ideas behind it. A picture is also newsworthy because of what it portrays and how the message is portrayed in the image. A newsworthy picture will tell a story and promote an emotional response from those who view it.

  4. Emotion is illustrated in photography through the facial expressions and body language of the people within the photos. If there are no people involved, normally the situation photographed will potray an emotion. For example, if the photograph is of a sad situation, it will illustrate a sad emotion. Colors also help to illustrate an emotion within a photograph. For example, bright colors potray happiness while dark colors potray sadness or anger. A picture is considered newsworthy if it grabs the veiwer's attention and deals with an important issue.

  5. What makes a picture newsworthy is the same thing that makes an article newsworthy. It has to have the 5 elements, but most importantly I think it should have human interest. What makes people want to study a picture is what is going on in the world that interests us the most...Things like war, hunger, politics etc etc etc. For a picture to be newsworthy, it must have human interest more than anything else.

  6. The lighting of the pictuer , the angle the pictuer and also what is in the backgroun.I think what makes a pictuer newworthy is what the picuter is about and also what the pictuer relates to.

  7. A photo can show many different emotions using objects and facial expressions and the lighting. The background could also set emotion, if the background is a big green lawn and a big house, it looks generally happy but if the background is a third world country, it generally looks depressed and hopeless.

  8. I think a newsworthy photo is one where holds significance to the focus of what is being taken. It holds a strong story and the person loooking at it can feel the emotion from it. You can see the emotion from the photo and if it is taken well, the viewer can easily see it.

  9. Emotion is illustrated in photography from the setting and mood of the picture. For example, if the sky is bright blue and the grass is green on a nice sunny day the emotion is happy especially if a child is playing which also brings up another point of how emotion is expressed. If people are in the photography, obvioulsy, if they are smiling, the emotion is happy, if they are frowning, the emotion in sad.

  10. Emotion is illustrated in photography by the subjects. It is also displayed by the background of the picture. Like if a picture is black and white, it has more of a dramtic feel than a color photo.

  11. Like Shelby said, the lighting and expressions is very important in capturing the emotion of the picture. If the lighting is dark, you sense sadness or scared, if its bright and happy with lots of colors you get the feeling of happiness. Although, your expressions dont always mimick your actual feelings, they almost always do. If there is a huge smile on the persons face, not only is the person feeling happiness, but the person viewing the photo also feels that same expression as well.

  12. Also, as Emma said, color and effects plays a major role in expressing emotion. If a picture is black and all dark colors, happieness is not implied.

  13. I agree with Emily. A picture is considered newsworthy if it draws a reaction or response from the viewer. Like she said, if the person looking at it becomes sad or mad or wants to know more about the situation, the photographer did a good job of capturing a newsworthy photo. I also agree with Armaan. A picture is newsworthy if it has a story behind it. This is because without a story it becomes quite boring and forces the viewer to lose interest.

  14. Emotion can be illustrated in photography by facial gestures as well as body language. Emotion can also show through the colors in the picture and through the action going on in the photo as well.

  15. How emotion is illustrated in photography is when you look at an emotional photo, you can always see that one thing that makes the photo emotional. If you have ever seen a picture of someone crying you can see the emoition in their eyes and how it makes the whole picture. What makes a picture newsworthy is mostly the mood and the 5 elements that we use in articles

  16. I agree with Gio's point about a picture having human interest. This is completely true, because if the picture isn't interesting and people can't connect to it, it won't be popular or newsworthy. People will not have any emotional type of reaction to a newsworthy picture, it would just be considered a cool picture or something interesting to see. Whereas a picture that is newsworthy will trigger emotions because of what it depicts and how it makes you feel about it.

  17. I agree with emma, a picture is newsworthy based on what the message is or what the photographer is trying to say. The effects that are made, like lighting or color or the focus also effects the emotion.

    ReplyDelete
  18. There are many ways emotion can be illustrated in photography, one being the message that the picture is giving the person viewing the picture. What makes a picture newsworthy, is based on different things. The way the picture is viewed, and how good the picture quality is are two very important ways.

  19. A lot of factors make a photograph newsworthy. But the most important thing that makes it newsworthy is that it tells a story through the emotions of the picture. If its a newsworthy story you should be able to decifer whats going on and what the people are feeling and there problems just by how there acting in the picture.

  20. I agree with Emma and Jenna when they said that the colors and tones of the picture have a great affect on how the photograph is portrayed. If the picture is brightened and enhanced, the picture will apear more upbeat but if the photograph is darkened the picture will automatically become more sad. This could either make a photo more powerful or less powerful because if the sad photo is too light it will not be as effective, and if the upbeat photo has dark undertones it will not seem that upbeat and the message may not get across.

  21. I guess the lighting could make a picture newsworthy, but I really do push for it having a huge human interest aspect. If noone cares about the picture, then they won't read the article. The picture should be powerful...Perhaps more powerful than the article, or at least setting the stage for a powerful article.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Also using lighiting and focusing on a certain aspect can focus on the most powerful part of this photo. Taking a photo from an interesting angle can also add effect to capture emotions and tell a story. I think the color of the photo can dictate the emotions from the picture, as where bright colors can make for a happy picture, and give off good emotions. On the other hand, if we have a dark photo without much light, there is not as much happiness given off.

  23. I agree with emma about how she said a picture is newsworthy when it has a story behind it

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree darker colors and tones leave a more emotional and dramatic feel to photos. Brighter colors and mor vibrant tones represent a happier emotion. Pictures don't ahve to have people with expressions in order to show emotion. Simple things, but things that are hard to notice can determine the importance of the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A picutre is made news worthy by the emotion it shows. Also, the quality of the photo is important. And wheather or not the photo is appropreit to what ever subject it is displaying.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with what daphne said. The lighting illustrates the emotion. The expression of someone's face starts the story.

    ReplyDelete
  27. A few things can make a piture newsworthy. In my opinion, the story behind the picture makes it newsworthy. Also, the emotion in the picture can make it newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Darker color in a picture definitly represents has more dramatic effect to the photo

    ReplyDelete
  29. emotion is illustrated in photography by what the scene is like what colors are in it . i agree with emily why the photos newsworthy

    ReplyDelete
  30. I feel as though a newsworthy photo must have an essence of curiosity behind it. For example, a picture of a starving child begging for food may trigger questions such as "Why is his life like this?" "Why has no one fed him?" "Why is he alone?" A newsworthy photo will tell a story, but it will also leave you with questions that you draw either from your reaction or from the emotions and situations you see depicted in the image.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with Armaan. Focus and Angle can create a more in-depth photo.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Daphne brigns up a good point when she said that the expression shown through the photo may not acvtually be what the illustrator wanted to show which just proves that the way a picture is shown potrays emotion based on perception.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I feel a picture is illustrated in photography by the lighting and the surroundings. The way a photo becomes newsworthy is the importance, there is a difference when there is a picture of, for example, a backpack on the floor, compared to a picture with meaning, like a child on the street begging for food.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Like most have said, I think a picture is newsworthy if it holds human interest. Obviously if it does not hold an intersting story behind it or have unique aspects, the viewer is going to look right past it. I agree with Daphne when she said that a picture is newsworthy if you are able to decifer the emotion of the situation. Without this, there is not enough to draw the reader in and grab their attention.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Jenna, emotion is express in a photo through the facial expression and the body language of the people in the photo. Also the coloring of the photo can express emotion. Like, if the photo is dark and the people in it are not smiling and/or crying, you can tell that the emotion of picture is sad. If the picture has bright colors and the people in it are smiling, you can tell that the emotion of the picture is happy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I definately agree with Shelbey on how lighting is a huge way in which emotion can be illustrated in a picture. If a picture is dark and gloomy, it's most likely going to be a sad or mad emotion that is going to be brought to the person viewing the picture. If the picture is all light and the background is sunny, it's most likely going to be a happy picture.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree with Gio there should be human intrest, if its a photo of something nobody cares about then, nobodys going to pay attention. If the photo has human intrest and emotion then its going to grab peoples attention even more. I also agree with Armaan, if theres no story behind the picture then theres no way to tell whats going on besides what you see in the picture, people can assume the photographer means one thing when they actually mean another.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I totally agree with Emma's last post...The picture MUST be appealing to the viewer, and it must make them want to continue reading, and it must inspire questions.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with Aarman and Daphne. The expression of the subject, focus and angle are important factors for a newsworthy photograph.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with Jordan Scott, the quality of the photo is important as well.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Not only the colors and lighting, but also the backround illustrates the emotion. Maybe it is a sunny day at the soccerfield and the little boy is happy. The backround included is what shows the emotion.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with both Jenna and Gio. Jenna in the sense that facial expressions, and body language tell a huge part of the story without actually putting words, also colors are a huge part of the emotion of the picture. For example, warm colors represent a good mood, or a warm, tropical enviorment, while cool colors represent a colder mood, and a cool enviorment. I agreee with Gio in the sense that picutres that are newsworthy usually have to follow the same steps as a article, inlcuding the 5 elements, most importatnly human intreast.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Photos are newsworthy when they tell a story and potrey a message as Emma said. The stronger the emotions a photo has, the more newsworthy it is. Emotion is illustrated in photography through the quality of the photo, and the actions taking place. If there are people in the picture, their facial expressions also show emotions.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I also agree with Gio when he says that a picture can be newsworthy as long as it has some sort of human interest, or prominence. People would much rather look at a picture with an important person who is known around the world, and holds a lot of fame. Otherwise, one that they can relate to, and understand what is going on in the photo, this way, they feel a lot more emotion than someone who doesen't know what is going on.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I aslo agree with Aarman and Daphne, the expressions in the pictre, as well as the angle and focus in which it was taken is also important.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree with Nick, darker lighting in the picture does give a more dramtic effect to the photo. Although photos that a bright and light could also express and happy and cheerful effect as well.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't think it's the lighting that makes a photo newsowrthy. The lighting and tones enhances the story, but that is the only purpose. It makes particular emotions come out and be enhanced based on how strong the photographer makes that emotion (using the tools like color and tone). It's all about what emotion the photographer choses to enhance to create a general feeling for his image.

    ReplyDelete
  48. For a picture to be newsworthy, it has to be significant that most people can relate to. It has to have meaning and has to be somewhat unusual. For example, a kid playing in a park is not very newsworthy, however, a kid begging in Japan for food is. For a picture to be newsworthy it should bring emotion to the viewer, it should make them have feeling. As Emma said, for a photo to be newsworthy, it make the viewer wonder and question. It should tell a story that intruigues people.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Emotion can be illustrated in a photo with shadow, color, and sometimes people. If the colors appear bright, you could infer that the photo is happy. If the colors are more gloomy and shadowy, the photo could be depressing. People can add emotion in a photo. Depending on the subject's position, that can say what the emotions are in a photo.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I agree with Shelbey and Kellyn when they say that lighting has a large impact on the emotion of a picture. this is because if there is a little light and a picture is dark, one would assume that the emotion is sad or angry. If there is a great deal of light or even sun, one would assume that the situation illustrated is a happy one.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I also agree with Jenna on how a picture is more newsworthy when there is a story behind it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree that lighting, angle, intensity are all factors that make a photo newsworhty. As Shelby said, colors potrey emotions such as vibrant colors give off a lively feeling while darker colors may show more depressed feelings.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I also agree with Emma, a picture definitley has to have or create curiousity. If the picture explains everything then theres no point in reading or writing the article to go along with it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I do agree with Emma when she says that it is not the lighting that makes a picture newsworthy, however, it is what enhances the emotion of thepicture or makes the photograph more interesting or appealing.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree with Gio and Emma, if the photo dosen't make you want to know more, or make you ask questions.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree with Daphne Black Robson because she brings up a great point. Like she said what makes a photo newsworthy is that the photo tells a story. If you look at a photo and could tell the story of the photo then it would be considered newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Like others have said, the quality of a photo is obviously important. Nobody is going to want to look at a picture of poor quality.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I also agree with Jenna, the lighting isn't really the newsworthy part of the picutre, I think its definatley essentially, but in the sense that it enhances the emotion and the feeling of the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't think that lighting has any affect on onything.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I agree with McKenzie. Photos should have definite emotions behind them that the viewer can feel.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Also, I agree with Emma where if the picture is being taken of people, then body language and facial expressions are very important when giving emotions through the photo.

  63. The backround completes the story as well as lighting and emotion. With no backround what is there to light? Emotion follows the people in the picture.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I agree with Daphne Black Robson (shout out to audrey) that when a photo tells a clear story then it really does make it newsworthy because that gives the viewer a connection to the picture and appeals to them emotionally becuase they know what is going on.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I agree with Jessica Lynn Kelley, when she that the lighting and etc. make a photo newsworthy. If you do not have the right lighting and etc. to go with the emotion of the photo then it is not newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with Mckenzie, the photos perception is also very important, the photographer could trying to be telling the viewer one thing in the photo and them portraying the picture in another way.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I agree with Daphney that a photo must have a clear message otherwise it can not have a strong emotion.
