One more thing about sports-this article approaches sports from an interesting angle. Read the article and discuss what makes it interesting, and if you think it is better than the typical advance/cover story. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=dw-wetzel_final_four_butler_goes_down_its_way_040511

  1. I do think that this is better than a typical cover story. Most cover stories talk about a sports team winning a game or somthing. They talk about how there efforts paid off and what not. This artical talks about the team loosing. But mainly focuss on how the team is much like a family. They were all upset about loosing, but got together and accepted their lost. Not many people would write an artical about that.

  2. What makes this interesting is the author talks about the brotherhood of the team. Nothing is closer than a high school or college sports team. It really is a brotherhood like the coach said. Not many other articles discuss this.

And this game is what happens when an 8 plays a 1. UCONN!

  3. This story is better than the average cover story because it has a video to go along with. I think the photos and video make it more interesting.

  4. This article is actually a touching sports story because it does not focus on the sport or game itself. Yes the game is established and talked about, but as background information. The real story lies within the hearts of the teammates and how they bonded despite letting the other one down. I thought it was great that they said "we want him to know we don't care about his shots, we care about him". This is an inspiring story about a close team, despite a crushing defeat, they still have each other instead of being angry. That is how it should be with all sports teams.

  5. I agree with what Jordan said, it's interesting that the article focuses on a crushing loss rather than a glorious victory. It already puts a spin on it to begin with, but when you actually read the story you find there's a lot more to it than just the simple game itself.

  6. It looks at the game from the perspective of Shawn Vazant, and other players from the team. Its very intresting because it shows it froma first hand point of view. It shows the intensity and dramatic emotion inside the game, rather than from the sidelines. I think it is alot better than a typical advance, or cover story because you are able to step onto the court yourself and into these players shoes.

  7. I also agree with what Gio says, the writer makes the story not all about the game, but the bond that theguys feel together.

  8. What makes this article interesting is that an underdog basketball team made it all the way to the finals "as they did last year" and ended up playing the worst game of their season at the worst time possible. This is better than a typical cover story because this aritcle shows a team who was not expected to make it to the finals and when they did they ended up playing a terrible game.

  9. This stories angle is a lot more interesting than most, because it is about how even though Butler had lost the game, when in the locker room, the whole entire team had been reminding eachother about how "it was more than just a basketball game." The two seniors on the team, Shawn Vanzant and Matt Howard, had felt like it was their fault for losing the game since they shot 3 for 23 together. You can tell that that team was not just a "basketball" team, they were a group of boys who stuck by eachother through the wins and even the hardest losses.

  10. I think this article is great, and is written from such an interesting angle. The author focuses on the losing Butler team, and how they pulled together. It would have been easy for him to just write an article about UCONN and how they won, but this writer took an interesting take on the game. It amazes me what went on in the locker room, and how all the players were able to comfort the saddened seniors who were unable to win the championship for the second year in a row. I think this author did a great job with the article.

  11. Also the video and pictures helps make the artical more news worthy.

  12. I agree with what gio said, they talk about the bortherhood that the team mates have with each other. And how Colllge sports and high schol sports form a family when they play togther, not many other people would cover this in an article.

  13. I agree with emma. it is interesting when there is so much talk about a devistating loss and not the big win for uconn

  14. I agree with everyone else when they say that this article is much better than your average cover story. This is because it has a very interesting angle to it and rather than focus on the success of the other team, it focuses on the loss of one and how they handled it. Like Emma said, this article is touching. It's amazing to see that a team can become so close that they don't care about a win, but rather the team itself. It's a remarkable story and teaches a very important lesson. I commend this journalist for writing such a compelling sports article.

  15. I think the underdog aspect of the story is interesting. The fact they didn't expect to make it to the finals makes it an incredible story, but their crushign defeat adds a tragic aspect of it. The unity of the team and cping with the loss together is what makes this story have a common human interest-= love for one another in a time when we need it most, in this teams case, after the loss of a national title.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I also agree with Jordan, it's interesting on how the story focuses on the team who had lost the most important game rather than the team who won and received all the glory.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think that what makes this article different from the other sports articles, is that it really shows how important the sport is to the team. These men cared so much about winning that game that they actually cryed hysterically after there horrible game.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree with Jordan. I like how this article focuses on the losing team rather than the winner. I also thought this article was very newsworthy because the sport wasn't placed above the actual story. The way this story was told gave more importance to it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. A typical advance or cover story is more focused on facts and focuses on both teams and whats expected and the line ups and things like that. This story was looking at the aftermath, how Butler dealt with the loss.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree with jordan, this is more interesting than a typical cover/advance story. This story is very emotional about them loosing, but they stuck together by their side.

    ReplyDelete
  21. This article also takes an issue and examines it at a deeper level. What I mean by this is that this journalist could have simply written about the loss of the team, however, rather than just stating stats and explaining what happened on the court, they took it upon themsdelves to visit the lockerroom and reflect on what he saw. This journalist did a great job for there was great emotion potrayed throughout the whole article.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think the fact that the underdog ended up losing at a game that no one ever thought they'd make it to also made it interesting. You always hear about games where the underdog wins, but you don't hear it when they lose because is expected.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I also agree with Emma. This artical was more touching than the average sports artical. It talks about the strong bond the team has which is somthing all sports teams should have.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That is exactly how I feel about that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with Gio I feel this article was very well written, and captured the essence of team bonding. The article was focused on how Butler dealt with the loss, and how the loss brougth them together, rather than the fact that Butler had the worst game that any team had had in the national chapionship.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What makes this article interesting is the fact that it is kind of " behind the scenes". You usually dont get to here about players crying in the locker room after a game. It showed us how close the team was, because when we watch basketball games we mostly just see the coachs yelling at the players and the players all agresssive. But in the locker room it shows that there isnt that much tention. The fact that the whole team came together and including the mangers and coaches shows what great of a team they are.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think the reason the losing team was the center of this article was because it is the perfect example of how much effort and dedication these basketball players put into the game. Plus this was one of the most crushing defeats in a championship game.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gio I agree very much with what you're saying.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Like jossalyn said, a cover or advance story is more about them winning or loosing, the score, and the team that won. This story was about the team loosing but in a emotional way, and more about the team than the score.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Also like emma said , its more interestung how they dont foucse on the team that won, and they talk about the team that lost. It shows that they also care about the team that lost as much as the team that one.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with Gio, its also interesting and better then most cover storys because it shows the team as a family, like a brotherhood.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with Jenna on how the person who had written this article could've just wrote about how the team had lost and had a bad game, but they took it farther and actually went into the locker room and looked at the team's perspective to give it a more "real" feel to the story.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah I agree with Emma and Jordan. This isn't the typical, "then won by 7" sports article. This was a more in depth sports article about the team chemistry. Not a lot of people know what that feels like.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The most interesting thing about this story is probably that it is not about the sport itself, instead, it is about how such a failure in a sport can actually bring out support and love. I do think this is a termendous story. Situations like these happen a lot yet nobody ever covers the story. Usually, the writer would focus on the game itself and stats yet this story focused on the impact the game had on the team in addition to incluidng stats from the game.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think this article is interesting becuase it is written at a different angle than other articles about the game. Instead of talking about the winning team and how they did great, this article talks about the losing team and how they tried hard to win. The article also talks about the locker room after a game. This article is a cover story because it talks about the game and the players after the game already happened.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Like Jordan and Marta said, I find it interesting that this article focused on the team that lost rather than the winning team. This adds an intersting twist to the story and gives it a very unique angle. I typically don't enjoy reading sports atricles, however, this is one that I enjoyed reading. This is because it didn't necessarily focus on the facts of the game, yet the emotional bond between the players.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This article is more interesting tnan a typical cover story because it is a story of what happens behind the scenes that the public usually will not hear about. Cover and advance stories usally always focus on the game itself including the plays made and statstics. Instead, this article tells the story of what occcured in the locker room. The public got to read about a private moment shared by a team that was really touching.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think when Butler missed all those shots it was becasue they were under pressure to win the championship again.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kayle brings up an interesting poitn about it being expected for the underdogs to lose, so their suusally isn't a story about it. That's completely true and it definitely adds another interesting aspect to the story. Overall this article comes at a common subject at many different, unexpected angles which is what makes it such a newsworthy and prominent story.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with Shelby, this author does a good job of putting us into the players shoes. While reading this article, I was seeing a lot of imagery. I could easily picture the scene when reading this article.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with Hayley that this article showing what happened in the locker room makes it better. Even when some articles show what happens between the teams in the locker room its usually them celebrating. Its not like that in this article, it shows the team being a family and lifting eachother up, thats what makes it even better.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with Jordan, and Emma the article was focused on Butler, the losing team, as oppossed to UCONN the winning team, and how there werere celebrating.

    ReplyDelete
  43. wow sorry my computer froze.. point, usually*

  44. The baby threw the monkey out of the window

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree with McKenzie, this article shows that positive things can come out of negative situations. For exasmple, the loss of Butler brought their team very close and impacted the unity of it greatly. Like she said, i'm sure situations happen like this all the time, but uit is less likely that we hear about it in a cover story.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree with Armaan, there was alot of imagery, but I don't really feel like im in the players shoes, I just felt like I was there.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree wit Kellyn because this news writer really went above and beyond and wanted to show what really happens to the losing team of a sports game. When everyone wants to interview the winning team, not alot of people ask about the team that lost.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This article was much better than the typical cover story because not only did it provide some facts of the game, it also focused on a sort of lesson in life. How this team held together even when they had lost nearly everything is something you don't hear everyday. I think that their actions are what made the game more worth knowing about, not just whether they won or not.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree with Marta, I also like how they covered the losing team. That I feel is not common, they always focus on the happiness of the winning team but never on the losing team. They never focus on the losing team, and in this article they do.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I do agree with everyone when they say this is better then a normal cover story because the true feelings of the players were revealed. Being active in many sports, I know that teams come together through tough times however nobody ever writes about it; nobody lets fans no how the palyers truley feel.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree with McKenzie, the most interesting this about this article is how the article is not written about the the sport, it is writtern about Butler lost and how it brought love and support. Authors usually focus on the game, but this one forcused on the impact from the game.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think alot of people would also find this intresting because is gives alot more detail.Artices tend to be easier to comprehend and lighter to read when you have alot of imagery and pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah Josslyn, I agree. How many articles do you see about the losing team? This is very unique because of this. Usually noone cares about the losing team, but this time someone took the time to recognize the bond between the players on Butler.

And Daryll I agree with you about the Monkey

    ReplyDelete
  54. Mostly all news articles are about the team that one the big game. Very rarely you have one about an upsetting loss. This is one of the things that makes this article better than most. It highlights the emotions that the players were feeling when they lost the biggest game of their lives. It not only summerizes what happened during the game and how the score came out, it also talked about the reactions to what this now means and how the players feel. They even go as deep as saying that many of the players were crying in the locker room.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes I agree, that overall the aricle was written well, and captured the mood of the locker room, and set imageryg as if I was actually there.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree with Jordan and Emma who said that focusing on the loosing team rather than the winning team made the article more interesting. The typical cover story always gives attention to the winning team and their achievements. Instead this article focus on the defeated team and was still able to give them a positive assessment.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This article was also very good due to all the imagery being used. You feel like you are there.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think that how they handled the loss is what's so amazing. Normally if a team lost the championship game, they'd be yelling at eachother- making accusations, putting blame one one another, even screaming about the plays and potential shots that were ruined. Instead, this team was very upset and opted to comfort each other rather than blame each other. It is truly inspiring that this is how the underdogs chose to handle a defeat such as this, the most "crushing defeat in history".

    ReplyDelete
  59. Like Emily I also agree with Kellyn, this writer went above and beyond to express the emotion and unity tat went on in that locker room after the game.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Marta and Hayley brought up a very good point. Covering the loosing team and being poitive is very interesting. Typically, if a story focuses on the losing team, it is often negative, about how they lost. However, Dan Wetzel made his story different, he positivly talked about the unity of the loosing team.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I agree with emma about the article coming accross with many unexpected angles and surprises. Readers like to be surprised and interested while reading an article to keep there interest.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I agree with Hayley an Marta when they said that they liked how this articles focuses on the losing team instead of the winning team. The fact that they focused on the losing team, makes this article interesting and unique.

    ReplyDelete
  63. i agree with jordan , they dont just talk about one person they talk about the whole team and it goes through there childhood , this article was interesting

    ReplyDelete
  64. One especially good aspect of the article, is how the author set up and organized the article. He first set up all the statistics and how Butler really did not do a good job in the championship game. Then he showed the emotions that came from the locker room, with Butler being there for each other and the seniors, it is especially dificult losing a championship game twice in two years.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Gio, I have to disagree with you. Ofcousre you don't see as many losing teams article, as you do winning. But it definatley isn't out of the ordinary, it is the National Championship game.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with emma, the close-knitted players comforting eachother after the game was very unexpected and touching.

    ReplyDelete
  67. OKAY JOHN! WELL ANSWER ME THIS: WHAT IS THE ARTICLE ABOUT? NOT ABOUT THEM LOSING BY TEN OR WHATEVER.

    ITS OUT OF THE ORDINARY.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I agree with McKenzie as well who brought up the point that this article shows how positive outcomes can folling negative thigs. Eventhough it was a devestating lost, in the end it actually benefited the team for it gave them a stronger connection and bond.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I also agree with many when they say that the underdog aspect of this article is unique. This is because this team wasn't excpected to make it this far and the fact that they did is amazing. Even though they had a bad performance on the night of the game, they proved to stay strong and keep their heads up.

    ReplyDelete
  70. NO GIO, you stated that it was out of the ordinary that a losing team got an article "becasuse nobody cares about them"

    ReplyDelete
  71. I disagree with Emma when she said that usually if teams loose the championship, they make accusations, blame each other, yell at each other and such. I feel that a lot of teams come together even if they loose, supporting each other, saying its okay. I think what is different about this article is that it actually COVERED the palyers after the game coming together. Most writers do not cover the bonding after the game, especially of the loosing team. However, even though I feel many teams unite after a big loss, this team was special.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I also agree with Shelby, people like reading sports articles with a lot of detail and emotion. This article deffinatly captured both those things.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yeah I guess your right Kisfhy, but I'm sure we can agree theres WAY less articles about the losing team then there is about the winning team

And I'm just kidding with the caps ;)
