Do you think this is a good review? Do you use consumer reviews before purchasing a product? Why are consumer reviews necessary? http://news.consumerreports.org/electronics/2011/04/first-look-blackberry-playbook-tablet-sends-mixed-messages.html

  1. I think that this is a good review. The reviewer tells what makes the Blackberry good, and also tells about the drawbacks.

  2. No, I don't think this was a good review at all. I feel as though it was very unprofessional when the writer says "I like the Web Browser". Reviews are not supposed to be opinionated to that extent. I think the review sent mixed signals as well, because it didn't give it a positive or negative review- it was both. I used consumer reviews depending on what it is I'd like to purchase. If it's a really expensive product than I'll definitely look into it, but if it's something cheap like a pair of headphones for $10 then i don't bother looking into it. Consumer reviews are important before purchasing a product because it gives you an idea of what you're actually buying from an honest person rather than the company who is obviously going to portray their product positively despite any complications with it.

  3. Consumer reviews are good to use before purchasing a product, because it gives you an unbiased view on the product. It gives both the pros and cons, and people don't usually lie about reviews because they don't want t give someone the advice to get a bad product.

  4. I did no think that this was a very good review for this new product. It did not really high light the good features of the black berry thing. It mostly focused on the negitive qualities.

  5. This is a good review because it lists both its strengths and it's weaknesses. It also gives evidence and says why it is having issues. It lets you make your own oppinion, and the author does not influence you too much.

  6. I also noticed that the author compares the BlackBerry Playbook to the iPad when he says "it could use a home button" and again when he says "the app store doesn't have the broad selection you find in the Apple store". The purpose of this article is not to compare the BlackBerry with the Apple, it is to provide information about the BlackBerry Playbook and it's pros and cons, not it's pros and cons compared to Apple.

  7. I also agree with Emma. I dont think that the author really got into detail about the Blackberry Playbook. And when they did they should very biast and personal reviews. The article was very contradicting towards itself because they gave many postives but many negative things towards the product as well.

  8. I do think this was a good review because the reviewers seemed to have an unbiased opinion. They did criticize the Blackberry PlayBook, but they did not tell anyone that the product was not good, and they did not try to convince the viewers not to buy it. This review was purely factual which is very important in a consumer review.

  9. Consumer reviews arae necessary, because like I said before, it gives an unbiased opinion about the topic. It gives consumers an idea about the product before buying it.

  10. Although it's good that the article showed both the postiives and negatives, but I think the author should've either made his review a positive one or a negative one. This article isn't very helpful to someone interested in buying the product. I think a review should either be mainly positive or mainly negative, because focusing on both is a major contradiction and may confuse a reader or someone interesting in buying the product.

  11. I agree with kaylee and emma. Article reviews gives you an idea of what the object your buyig is going to be like. This review was not good at all.

  12. When I buy a product I usually dont look at consumer reviews but I do ask my friends and peers about the product to get their opinions about it. Both of these techniques help in picking which product you are giong to use because your able to see whats wrong the the product and if its worth your money so you know if you should buy the product and not waste time and money on it.

  13. Consumer reviews before the product is sold is needed in order to fix an problems the product may have. For instance, if consumers say a device goes really slow, then its the company's job to fix it before it comes out. If not they will not make as much as a profit.

  14. I think this was a good review. It isnt biased and it tells the drawbacks of the playbook. I personally ask my friends and other people what they think about something before they buy it. Consumer reviews are necessary because they tell you how well an item worked for other people and what alot of people thought about an item.

  15. I disagree with Emma because when the man is discussing the applications, he is not comparing them to the Apple app store, he is comparing the selection to those on other Blackberrys. The point of the review is to show people the product before they spend their money on something they may not want. For example, if somebody wanted to get this in order to view their emails better, they would now know that this is not the product for them.

  16. I useally don't use consumer reviews before buying a product. I am not one to buy alot of electronics and things like that, so i never needed to look into any reviews. Although, i can see why consumer reviews would be a good thing to use when buying a product. Like what Emma said, it will help you get other honest opinions about the product you are purchasing.

  17. I think in some aspects this is a good review while in other aspects, it is not. I do agree that it does provide a great deal of information and offers both the positives and negatives of the device. On the other hand, it is a bit unprofessional like Emma said, for they can be a bit oppinionated at times and lack detail. In some instances they provide a great deal of information supporting their claims, while in other cases, they fail to do so. Consumer reviews are good because it gives potentional buyers the option to obtain a better idea about the device before spending a great deal of money on it. It also will provide the potential consumer the pros and cons of it and can help them in their decision towards buying it or not. If the product I am buying is a large sum of money, I typically read consumer reviews, however, I ignore them if the product is generally cheap or affordable.

  18. I agree with shelby, it does show its strengths and weakness. Not every electronic is going to be perfect but the reveiws are going to tell you what the electronic is like.

  19. While this article does not seem very proffesional at all, something I liked about it is that the person who wrote this review is not giving me all good feedback trying to persuade me to buy something. Lots of times all I see is people giving dishonest reviews to try and get me to buy it, making me regret it later. Like Emma, I don't think the article was that good, as it was not at all specific and sent me mixed feelings about the product.

  20. I do use consumer reviews before purchasing a product, because they let me see what it will be like to own this product, and if the product actually works. Sometimes a product will come out that doesn't actually work very well and I want to make sure that I do not waste my money on something like that.

  21. Consumer reviews are very important but I think the comments from other people are important too. Professional people presenting the product to you have to have an air of proffessionalism as well as highlighting the qualities of the product. People that have actually bought the product and used it multiple times will have a better idea of how it works rather than someone who has only used it a few times. People that own the BlackBerry Playbook may disagree with what the consumer is saying and will definitely h ave their own, often stronger, opinions of the product. The two comments i read under it were both positive and said that although it had a few minor problems, overall it was a good product worth purchasing. This article makes the Playboook seem not as good as the customers make it sound, and considering they're the ones that own it, I would take their opinion over this article.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I feel that the review is actually pretty good. It provides you with both the strengths and weaknesses which is not a bad thing, it gives you an overall outlook on the blackberry. After all, the title of the article is, "BlackBerry PlayBook tablet sends mixed messages" so of course the article is going to be about those mixed messages meaning it will list both the good and bad factors of the product.

    ReplyDelete
  23. This review did not really highlight the PlayBook, mostly just compared it to other tablets and focused on more of the negative. You didn't really learn about the PlayBook itself.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with Emma this article wouldnt be helpful to someone looking to buy the playbook because of the way the authour gives both pros and cons. I do think its good to know both the good and bad but if i were actually to buy the playbook then i wouldnt really use this review to help make my decision.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Consumer reviews are nessisary becuase, they would be more truthful than what the company says. The company would useally try to high light all the good things in what ever they are trying to sell. Consumer reviews show the good and bad things in the product.

    ReplyDelete
  26. To some extent, I agree with Emma. I feel it was unprofessional for the writer to give his opinion on thr product. However I did not agree when she said that she didn't like how it was both negative and positve. Personaly, I think it was good how both the positive and negative were mentioned. In reviews, I think that the truth should be revealed about the product. As a consumer, I want to know whats good and bad about the product so I can compare pros and cons.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Like Daphne said, I also ask my friends about a product before buying it. In this way, I obtain a little more information on the product I am spending my money on and make the right decision towards buying it or not. Consumer reviews help people to make these decisions and provide them with opinions on how good the product really is. In my opinion, they are very helpful and can only help a potential buyer to make a decision.

  28. Usually, I don't read the consumer review reports. I am not usually buying something reallly important and expensive online unless it is tickets to an event, I would rather do that in person, so I feel it is unnecesary to read it. Sometimes, I would scan by something just to see what people are saying about it. Consumer reports can be important because they are people who have seen the product and I don't make a mistake about my purchase.

  29. @Emily, he is comparing the selection of apps on the BlakcBerry to the selection of apps that Apple offers. I do agree with what you said about consumers needing to make sure the product meets their specific needs though, as this is extremely important in determining if you want to spend the money on it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Like Emma said, this review was a bit unprofessional and in some instances a bit more supportive information could have been used, however, I do not think this review should have been either positive or negative. The product has both pros and cons and I think it would be biased to only include one side of the argument.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This is also a first review guys! This is the first product that BlackBerry has made like this, oibviously it's going to change and obviously there are going to be other reviews on it that are more detailed and probably more informative.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with Aarman, Obviously if it has alot of problems, I or anyone else on that metter, are not going to buy the product.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I disagree with alot of you. I feel there is nothing wrong with the review. It gives you a basic idea of the PlayBook and anyway if you are looking into somehting expensive you need to do some research yourself, and you can't soley base your purchase on other peoples reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with most of what everyone is saying. I dont feel it is a good review, I did not think it was professional at all. I feel this way because it didnt seem to give strong examples as to why it was bad and why it was good.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Consumer reviews are necessary because the buyer needs to know what they are thinking of buying. They tell you from the buyer's view what they think about the product. When someone wants to buy something, they want a lot of opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Jordan, consumer reports are different from company reviews because they don't give me all good feedback. Consumer reviews will let me know about the negatives of the product before I buy it. It will help someone know if they are making a mistake to buying a product.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree when Emma said that it is not only important to look into the review when considering a product but also to read what the people said. Often reviews are biased, however, when the people write about the product, there are many different opinions from the people who actually own it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think comparing the blackberry to other products was actually helpful because for those who own a Blackberry phone, as the article said, may be expecting the PlayBook to be very similar when in fact it is not in many cases such as the navigation system. This article is useful because it warns those accustomed to the phone that they should not be assuming it is the same thing.

  39. I agree with McKenzie. This is the first review, and you really shouldn't judge a product from one person's view. Get multiple opinions and consumers make a decision from that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Honestly, the review dosen't need to be professional, in fact when I read reviews, and people try sounding smart, but in essence they don't know what they're talking about. I feel a reviw shouldn't inlcude every possible detaili about the product, rather the basis of the product.

    ReplyDelete
  41. As Jordan mentioned, sometimes companies are not as honest as they should be about their product so it is extremely helpful to read consumer reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  42. As the consumer, I honestly dont read reviews. I basically go by the commercials; which might not be good because a commercial is obviously only going to highlight something good about the item. If I see something that I might want, I would probably get it and not care what others say.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Before purchasing a product, I sometimes use consumer reports. I do this becasue I feel that it is important to know the different opinions about the products. It is important to know the pros and cons and then from there, you could decipher if the product was worth money. I also do this because I would not want to spend a lot of money on something that is not worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I personally read reviews very often mostly for evertything i buy online and they are very helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Consumer reviews are necessary because it gives you the persepective from those who actually have the product. You can read numerous reviews before and get an overall idea of what the opionon and feelings towards the product are. Sometimes I will use consumer reviews before purchasing a product, especially if the product is expensive and a big purchase as Emma said. they are quite helpful especially if your ordering something online since you cant even see what your buying in person first.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I thought this was an okay review, because it had limited information about the actual product, and it was mostly about the person who was reviewing's opinion. I personally dont use consumer reviews, but i feel they are necessary because they give people atleast a little information about the product they're looking at rather than not having any information about it at all.

  47. Consumer reports are necessary becasue it is important to know facts about the product you might buy. It is extremely important to read reports on expensive products because they are more valuable and most likely are more important. However, a $6 brush I would not need to read a report on because it is both cheap and not very importatn. Consumer reports are necessary because it is importatn to know what a product is really like, not what the company says.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree with Jess, consumer reviews give people a feel of the product from the perspective of someone who has the product.

  49. I feel even though I do not read reviews, they are good to have because it shows other peoples oppinions on the product and they could be helpful to some people. I also agree with john a review does not have to be professional to be good. People honestly like peoples reviews that are living with the product themselves.Overall reviews are helpful because it shows the pros and cons to an item and could possibly persuad the person to buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I agree with McKenzie on how something cheaper wouldnt need a review because you can already tell that it's cheap due to it's price. However, something more expensive would need a review so you have some feedback about the product so you don't go out and spend a fortune on something that wasn't even worth it.

  51. I agree with Emma. This review on the PlayBook was not very good. Even though the author described the pros and cons about the PlayBook, he did not do a good job on comparing the PlayBook to the IPad.

  52. I have to question the biases of the review...The PlayBook was compared to certain things that lead the author to explain some of the downsides of the product, but I still see some biases, and I beliieve the author is a supporter of the PlayBOok.

And Kellyn, just because something is cheep, doesn't mean its bad. For example I have a B.C. Rich guitar. It's not as good as an ESP or something of a higher quality but the materials it was made out of help improve the sound and quality, even though it weas only 250 dollars. It is still a good product, and this one may be good as well.

And I do also have to say that these reviews are good for consumers, unless they are obviously biased.
