Discuss your opinion on this story. Highlight why it is newsworthy & what you would take a picture of to capture the essence of the story. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-mother-drowns-kids-20110414,0,221941.story
Well this is newsworthy because it talks about a mother attempting and succedding to kill her kids and herself. This is such a big story that it is a concern nation wide. People want to know about these things. The fact that this woman was killed as well brings down the concern with the public, because she is no longer a threat to the safety of the public. If she had lived, then the people of new york would be living in even more fear.
this video is newsworthy because it tells a story about how a ten year old boy escaped from a window and got help.My opnion on this story was that the mother was crazy and needed help, she took the lives of her children because she hated her life.
This story is completly horrible and is gut-turning. It's newsworthy because it is so upsetting, and readers would find this totally out of the ordinary. It also happened in a small town, so alot of people could relate. I think the picture of the teddybear was a very good idea, because it shows the innocence of the kids.
This artical is news worthy because it was a very tragic thing to happen to that town. Its news worth because no one would want that to happen to their own children and it has human intrest in that sence. This artical is also news worthy because the reader of the artical can't help but question the mother's motives and why she would do such a thing to her self and family.
I think that it's unfair that the woman decided to kill her children with her. If there was domestic violence involved, I don't think it's right that she felt her only escape was suicide for her children. Even if her life was bad, that's no reason to take the lives of children who haven't even had a chance to live yet. It is extremely selfish to kill 3 of her children along with herself. For a photo, I think I would chose a picture of the woman and her four children at a happier time. This puts a positive aspect to the situation so people wouldn't think that the woman is a monster, rather just a woman who was in a terrible situation but a woman that did love her kids nonetheless.
a picture that i would take to help understand the story is taking a picture of the car when the police found it, also i wonder where the ten year old boy will go, also what did she say to them before he drove into the river
I agree with Emma. A good picture would be of the mother and her children at a better time. It would show that the woman wasn't a phycotic, muderous person.
This is news worthy because you don't usually see something like this happen. A mom of three kids kills herself and her kids. Also the 10 year old escaped to get help.
I think that this most likely could have been prevented. I doubt that if a middle aged woman was this crazy to drown her kids and herself in the Hudson river than she must of been showing signs before that. I predict that she was beginning to show signs of her psychoness, and people just wreent catching on. If she had gotten the proper treatment and therapy 3 lives could have been saved in the process.
I agree with emma and what she said, i think that it was very unfair of her to not only kill herslef but also take the lives of her children. If she thougth that her life was that bad then she should have seeked help for herslef.
I agree with Emma....A picture of a happier time wiht the family will show how things can go from normal to tragic. It also will show how it could happen to anyone.
This article is newsworthy because as Jordan said, the event was very tragic. Four deaths occured that could have been prevented. This is not something that happens everyday, and it upset the whole town.
In my opinion, this video and article was very newsworthy. It is newsworthy because something like this does not happen everyday. This was very tragic and sad. I agree with Emma, it was fair that the mother thought that the way out was to kill herself and her children, if there was domestic violence was involved.
I agree with Brittney because its definetly something that happened randomly and there arent many stories around that deal with mothers drowning their kids in the Hudson river, this would be part of human interest because it doesnt happen a lot. Plus its also somewhat of a miracle that the 10 year old son was able to gethelp and free himself from the car.
This story is one that is newsworthy because we don't hear of somethign like this usually. It definetly connects to human interest, because people want to know about how this happened. It's out of the ordinary and in all, a heartbreaking story. Clearly, the woman was not in her right mind, and led to this tragic story.
My opinion is that there obviously must have been something mentally wrong with the woman that drove a minivan into a river killing 3 of her children. This story is newsworthy because of the fact a woman killed her children by randomly driving into a river. No one knows why this woman comitted this murder/suicide, and i'm sure many people want to know why she did. I would take a picture to capture the essence of the story of the stuffed bear that was shown at the end of the video that was seemed to have been "rescued" from this tradgedy.
This story is newsworthy because it deals with a very important issue that affects a great deal of people. Anyone reading this or hearing about this story would be completely shocked that a mother would do this to herself and her children. Not only did she go to the extreme of killing herself, yet killing her children as well. This obviously has a great deal of human interest because after watching that video, I already want to know more. The fact that it deals with children and an occurrence that doesn not typically happen also makes it newsworthy. If i could take a picture to capture the essence of the story, it would be a photo of either the family before the event or the memorial shrine that they created after the event. This is because it either way, it shows how the event changed the lives of everyone.
I also think that if LaShonda was mentally ill than it would be crucial that she got help or at least tried other ways to help herself before she opted to commit suicide. At least that way she would've felt that there are other, btter ways to deal with what's going on. For all she knows, her kids could've done amazing things in the world, and she took their lives away. One of them could've found the cure for cancer, one could've been president, etc. It's unlikely, but you really never know. It's not right to take away the lives of someone that hasn't even gotten the chance to live and decide for themselves.
I agree with Jordan because this lady is crazy! Although she was under alot of stress, and I understand that without anyone to help her take care of her four kids, that life would be more difficult for her. There is still no excuse for what she did. There were so many other options that Armstrong could have taken rather then killing herself and her kids. She could have put the kids in a foster home because although it would be hard for her to have to live life without her kids, in the long run she would have been alot happier.
I also agree with Emma about the picture. If there was a picture of the family of a happier time we would be reminded that it wasnt always like this and that she was mentally sick and it had nothing to do with her kids or herself it was her body and brains fault.
This story is newsworthy because it definitely has human interest. The woman made a decision that is controversial. It was horrible for her to have killed her kids, but maybe she thought that if she were gone then the kids would have no place to go. If they went to foster homes they would've very likely been separated. They couldn't really go to their father because it didn't seem like he had a care in the world for his family. This woman could've definitely found help somewhere, so this choice could've definitely been made better.
I agree with Da[hne, when she said that this could be prevented. She must have been showing signs that she was crazyy throughout the years, a person does not become crazy over night.
I agree with Brittney. This whole ordeal must have been very scary for the boy who survived this. Another picture I would use for this artical would be a picture of the memorial/shrine for the children and mother. That would capture the story and make it seem more real.
A picture I would capture would be a picture of the 10 year old boy. I would take that picture because he was the one to escape out of the car and get help. If it wasn't for the 10 year old, noone would have known exactly what happend.
This story is also newsworthy because it introduces another aspect besides LaShanda killing herself and her children. This aspect is that previous to this drowning, she faced domestic violence and an abusive relationship at home. This could and most likely was LaShanda's reasoning besides killing her and her children, however, it does not make it right. Something must have been wrong with this mother to go to the extreme of killing her children. Unfourtunately, you hear a great deal of storuied about people committing suicide, however, much fewer about a mother killing her children. This is highly sad to me and I can't imagine how the extended family is dealing with it.
This article is newsworthy because its such a tragic thing. It's not everyday that you hear about a woman trying to commit suicide, and kill her four children as well. I've obviously never been in a situation like Lashaunda Armstrong, but she took the easy way out. She didn't try hard enough, and she could have given her children to social services, or another family member. I my opinion, it was a cowardly thing to do.
I agree with what Jenna said and I also agree with what Brittney said. This story is major in human interest because it's so unusual for a mother to kill her children, which are some people that you're supposed to always want to protect. As for the 10 year old boy that survived, I think the rest of that boys life is going to be filled with regret and morbid curiosity. He's laways going to be wondering why, and no one is going to give him an answer. For the rest of his life that boy is going to be missing his three other siblings, his mom, and now he has his dad who didn't seem to be in the picture to begin with. I feel awful for that child. He now has to deal with a selfish decision that someone else tried to make for him, which was whether or not he got to live. It's messed up.
It was incredibly unfair of Armstrong to attempt to take her children's lives. Unfortunatley, she succeeded in killing three of her children. She could have left them to live with their grandparents or something. There were so many other options and Armstrong chose the most selfish one I could think of.
I also agree with Jordan, and Brittney. The situation must have been horrible for the 10 year old....sonsiderin ghe had to watch his family die and he couldnt do anything about it. He will remember that for the rest of his life, and he is so young.
I think that this woman was completely irrational and crazy. It was unfair for her to kill herself and her children because she was having difficulty dealing with her life. First, it was her life she made it that what. Second, she couldve always ask for help. Now her 10 year old son is alone without a mother and by the way the article made it sound like their father was never around probably without his father to.
I agree with Jordan, this lady must have some kind of crazy in her. I feel this is newsworthy because it shows timliness and human interest. This recently happened on 12th of april. I feel this is interesting because its not normal that a woman trys to kill herself and her children. This whole story is just wierd.
I agree with McKenzie because this article has to do with timliness, due to how this whole thing happened recently and it may grab the readers attention more than a story that happended a few months ago would.
The photo of the vigil held for the family at the dock was a good idea for a newsworthy photo to go with the article, but it was not very successful in my eyes because there was only one teddybear at the dock. A good picture would have been the vigil with more things there, Or perhaps a picture of the family. The photo that captures the story well would also be a picture of the dock at the Hudson River, although that has a negative outlook on the story. That is when I would use a picture of the family, because that has a positive look on the story, even though it was terrible.
Yeah I agree with Emma...That story alone is also human interest. People are going to be curious about what is going to happen to him. Even right now I am curious about this child. This really is a hearbreaking story.
I agree with Brittney and many others when they said that they would take a picture of the 10 year old boy who survived. This is because this event must have made a serious impact on his life. I can't imagine bveing in that position and being the only one to survive out of my mother aand siblings. The poor boy now has to live with this in the back of hid mind for the rest of his life. It is not fair to him at all and it saddens me that this mother's insanity led to such a tragic situation. I feel as though a picture of the surviving boy would enhance the story because aside from all the negative aspects of it, it shows a positive one.
I would take a picture of the vigil set up at the dock to captujre the essence of the story because that basically sums the whole thing up representing the deaths of LaShanda Armstorng and three of her kids and the grief that fellow residents are feeling.
Sorry Daphne. I agree with Marta, this story has human interest. It was horrible that she killed her children, and that shocked the people that live in New York.
I agree with Emma when she said that she didn't think it was right for the mom to escape the life she didn't want and take the childrens. Just because she might have not had a good life, just because she messed up, and just because she may have been irresponsible and not able to handle the streses she, or other people and things put on her, she had no right to take her helpless childrens life. This is going to sound really bad but if she wanted to escape the life that she didn't like she should have only killed herself, however, her children would be left alone yet they would have the chance to have a better life.
As most people said, this is newsworthy because it is very strange, and out of the ordinary. Women do not usually kill their children. The picture I would put with this article would be one of the Hudson River, because it shows the river where Armstrong drove into in order to kill herself and her kids.
For a picture id choose a picture of their usual life, like in the article it explains that the woman would walk down the street with a baby on her hip, two kids and groceries. That would represent how their life was.
Although this article is very timely, I still think even if it happened two months ago i touwl d be interesting. Stories like this are very unusual, so I think that their time span (or who long they're interesting) is a little longer than any other type of story due to how tragic this reallly is. I wouldn't doubt it if this article ends up back in the news at a later date with a statement from the father as a follow up story. It would be very intersting to learn what was really going on that made LaShonda make this drastic choice.
I agree with emma when she says that for the rest of his life the boy is going to be wondering why this happened and have all these questions that nobody can answer. The boy will most likely suffer from this for the rest of his life and will never forget it. Unfourtunately, he is at the age where he can remember most things and I can't imagine being in his shoes.
This story is very newsworthy becasue he has human interest. The fact that a mother drowned or attempted to drown all of her children makes people interested. It makes people wonder why and how, what she was thinking and why she thought that was okay. Another reason this article is newsworthy becasue of timeliness. This chaos occured recently which also grabs readers interest because it is new news. In addition this article takes place in the East Coast which makes it newsworthy becasue of proximity.
I agree with most people, its newsworthy because its unique. You dont hear about or see mothers drowning their children in the Hudson River. Its a terrible thing to happen but its what makes the article interesting.
I agree with Kaylee. Armstrong had so many other choices, but she didn't really try that hard to fix the situation. She was in a depressed state and that can make anything seem hopeless and death seem welcoming. She really shouldn't of taken her kids with her and she could've found help. She was so stressed out, anything looked bleak.
I agree with Jordan it would appear that young Lo'Shanda was crazy. I think it was very selfish and wrong for her to kill her children along with herself. Suicide is bad when its one person, but homocide, and attemted homoicide is even worse. I feel real bad for the kids, and for the 10 year old boy, although he escaped he would have to live the rest of his life, knowing that his mother killed his siblings, and the fact that the little kids some barely old enough to crawl, can never live their life, and they were cheated out of a full life, by their so called "loving mother". For the picture I would do the picuture of the bunny, as an honoring of the kids killed in their mothers cowarldy suicide.
I think it's newsworthy because it has timeliness, it happened on the twelvth. It has human interest because its a tragedy. The story has consequence, because it will hopefully impact other stressed-out mothers, and make sure they don't do what Lashaunda did. This story also has magnitude, because i'm sure its very controversial. Some think it was a cowardly thing to do, while others may feel that she felt trapped, and it was her only way out. Lastly, it has proximity, because its located in the United States. It has a closer proximity to Lincoln than other places in the country because its on the east coast.
We also don't really know if Armstrong tried anything else to help herself. The article didn't mention it, so we're just assuming. Hopefully if there's a follow up article we'll know more.
I agree, the story is also newsworhty because people feel bad for La'Shaun Armstrong, just ten years old escaped for the car and got help. It is amazing he was able to open the power window and climb over his mother, and he will never forget such a moment. I agree with Emily, I think that Lashanda is a selfish woman, and not only took her own life, but had to kill her three children as well. Hopefully the father is not part of this situation, and La'Shaun will have someone to live with.
I agree with everyone that the story was horrible because a mother took the life of not only herself but also her children. That's awful that a parent would want to take away the lives of things they created. If she wanted to take her own life so be it, but it was not right to include her children.
The picture I would take to capture the essence of this story would be simple. I would just leave as a picture of the Hudson river or a picture of La'Shaun. I feel I would go more towards the picture of the hudson because I dont think it would be good for the little boy to be in the public like that, he's so young. I dont feel there is any other way to capture this story through picture, so keeping it simple would be best.
To capture the essence of the story, I would take a picture of La'Shaun looking walking away from the Hudson where his family drowned. I would use this picture becasue it would show how brave this ten year old boy was and how tough he was. This would also transfer feelings to the reader because they would most likely feel bad for the boy in addition feel bad for the children who died. Also, this picture would show the who(even though the mom couln't be shown becuase she is dead), what, where, when, why, and how. This photo would potray the emotions that the little boy has and may connect to the reader.
Different things affect people in different ways. I find it very unfourtunate that this woman was so negatively impacted by her abusive relationship that she drove her children into the Hudson river. Like many others said, she could have gotten help or done something else with the children. Her children did not deserve to die because of her troubles. In addition, she could have gottten help in different ways instead of killing herself.
I think a picture of La'Shaun Armstrong (Lashaunda Armstrong's only surviving child)sitting in the back of an ambulance would be newswothy. Also, a picture of the memorium for the Armstrongs would be a newsworthy photo. A picture of Lashaunda and her children could also be newswrthy.
I think it is important for readers to notice what an amazing boy La'Shaun must be considering he was able to find a way to escape drowning and was able to find help on his own. He may be mentally scared for the rest of his life but it was amazing to see how her was able to react.
I think that the worst part of the story is the fact that these children probably loved their mother a lot, but three of them died knowing that she didn't even try to save them. Also, the only survivor was her ten year old son, who is old enough to remember everything, and will live his life, knowing his mother tried to kill him.
I agree with Mckenzie, and all of her claims of the aricle being newsworthy. It incorporates human intreast, becasue people are intreasted in little kids, and unfortuantaley the deaths. I also agree that it has timiliness, considering that it had happened recently.
I also agre with Mckenzie in the fact that a picture of Lo'Shaun walking away from the Hudson would be powerful, an dwould tell the story, and would keep people intreasted, and wanting to know more.
I also feel really bad for La'shaun, he is going to have to live the rest of his life with the thought of what just recently happened. I kinda feel bad that he wasnt younger because although he is still very young he's going to remember everything that happened. Compared to if he was 11 months like his brother, I dont not think he would have had to deal with all of the memories of what happened. I feel so bad that La'shaun had to deal with all of that at so young of an age.
shes CRAZY !

First, it was her life she made it that what. Second, she couldve always ask for help. Now her 10 year old son is alone without a mother and by the way the article made it sound like their father was never around probably without his father to.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jordan, this lady must have some kind of crazy in her. I feel this is newsworthy because it shows timliness and human interest. This recently happened on 12th of april. I feel this is interesting because its not normal that a woman trys to kill herself and her children. This whole story is just wierd.
ReplyDeleteI agree with McKenzie because this article has to do with timliness, due to how this whole thing happened recently and it may grab the readers attention more than a story that happended a few months ago would.
ReplyDeleteThe photo of the vigil held for the family at the dock was a good idea for a newsworthy photo to go with the article, but it was not very successful in my eyes because there was only one teddybear at the dock.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree with Emma...That story alone is also human interest. People are going to be curious about what is going to happen to him. Even right now I am curious about this child. This really is a hearbreaking story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brittney and many others when they said that they would take a picture of the 10 year old boy who survived.
ReplyDeleteI would take a picture of the vigil set up at the dock to captujre the essence of the story because that basically sums the whole thing up representing the deaths of LaShanda Armstorng and three of her kids and the grief that fellow residents are feeling.
ReplyDeleteSorry Daphne. I agree with Marta, this story has human interest. It was horrible that she killed her children, and that shocked the people that live in New York.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Emma when she said that she didn't think it was right for the mom to escape the life she didn't want and take the childrens.
ReplyDeleteAs most people said, this is newsworthy because it is very strange, and out of the ordinary. Women do not usually kill their children. The picture I would put with this article would be one of the Hudson River, because it shows the river where Armstrong drove into in order to kill herself and her kids.
ReplyDeleteFor a picture id choose a picture of their usual life, like in the article it explains that the woman would walk down the street with a baby on her hip, two kids and groceries. That would represent how their life was.
ReplyDeleteAlthough this article is very timely, I still think even if it happened two months ago i touwl d be interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with emma when she says that for the rest of his life the boy is going to be wondering why this happened and have all these questions that nobody can answer. The boy will most likely suffer from this for the rest of his life and will never forget it. Unfourtunately, he is at the age where he can remember most things and I can't imagine being in his shoes.
ReplyDeleteit would*
ReplyDeleteThis story is very newsworthy becasue he has human interest.
ReplyDeleteI agree with most people, its newsworthy because its unique. You dont hear about or see mothers drowning their children in the Hudson River. Its a terrible thing to happen but its what makes the article interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kaylee. Armstrong had so many other choices, but she didn't really try that hard to fix the situation. She was in a depressed state and that can make anything seem hopeless and death seem welcoming. She really shouldn't of taken her kids with her and she could've found help. She was so stressed out, anything looked bleak.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jordan it would appear that young Lo'Shanda was crazy.
ReplyDeleteI think I would take a picture of the surviving boy crying. This would be very powerful and inspire people to read the article.
ReplyDeleteI think it's newsworthy because it has timeliness, it happened on the twelvth.
ReplyDeleteWe also don't really know if Armstrong tried anything else to help herself. The article didn't mention it, so we're just assuming. Hopefully if there's a follow up article we'll know more.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the story is also newsworhty because people feel bad for La'Shaun Armstrong, just ten years old escaped for the car and got help.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone that the story was horrible because a mother took the life of not only herself but also her children. That's awful that a parent would want to take away the lives of things they created. If she wanted to take her own life so be it, but it was not right to include her children.
ReplyDeleteThe picture I would take to capture the essence of this story would be simple.
ReplyDeleteA good picture to go with the story would be like many people said, a picture of the family together, sort of like a memorial.
ReplyDeleteTo capture the essence of the story, I would take a picture of La'Shaun looking walking away from the Hudson where his family drowned.
ReplyDeleteDifferent things affect people in different ways.
ReplyDeleteI think a picture of La'Shaun Armstrong (Lashaunda Armstrong's only surviving child)sitting in the back of an ambulance would be newswothy. Also, a picture of the memorium for the Armstrongs would be a newsworthy photo. A picture of Lashaunda and her children could also be newswrthy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with McKenzie. The picture that she described would capture the essence of the story perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI think it is important for readers to notice what an amazing boy La'Shaun must be considering he was able to find a way to escape drowning and was able to find help on his own. He may be mentally scared for the rest of his life but it was amazing to see how her was able to react.
ReplyDeleteI think that the worst part of the story is the fact that these children probably loved their mother a lot, but three of them died knowing that she didn't even try to save them. Also, the only survivor was her ten year old son, who is old enough to remember everything, and will live his life, knowing his mother tried to kill him.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mckenzie, and all of her claims of the aricle being newsworthy. It incorporates human intreast, becasue people are intreasted in little kids, and unfortuantaley the deaths. I also agree that it has timiliness, considering that it had happened recently.
ReplyDeleteI also agre with Mckenzie in the fact that a picture of Lo'Shaun walking away from the Hudson would be powerful, an dwould tell the story, and would keep people intreasted, and wanting to know more.
ReplyDeleteI also feel really bad for La'shaun, he is going to have to live the rest of his life with the thought of what just recently happened.
