  1. I think the picture that captures the story the best are the ones of the man putting the sea turtles back into the ocean. During the oil spill, one of the things that was affected the most were the animals in that area. This picture shows that many animals either died or couldnt live in that area and had to get human help.

  2. I agree with Jordan because I think the photo that captures the story the best is the one where the man is putting sea turtles back into the ocean because it shows the effects of the oil spill, and how it effected the sea creatures.

  3. I think that the pictuer that captuers the story the best is the one were the oil is on fire and the smoke comming out of the water. I think that this is the best on because it shows whats going on and that this oil spill has made a big effect on the world.

  4. I think that the picture that captures the story the best is the one showing the oil from the water being burned. I think this picture captures the picture the best because it shows how much oil there really was in the ocean. This is one of the only pictures that shows a direct relationship to the oil spill. Thus, I believe that this picture captures the story the best.

  5. I agree with jordan. The other pictures do not look interesting ot look like they tell a good story. The guy putting the turtles back in the water shows that he would do anything to help the animals.

  6. I think the picture of the oil rig that is burning in the Gulf of Mexico because the picture captures an idea of what was going on during this tragic oil spill. The caption didn't really catch my eye because even though it met all the criteria with the who, what, where, why, and when, it didnt have very exciting details.

  7. I think the photo that captures the story most is the picture of the smoke coming out of the ocean from the oil rig. I think that this captures the story the best because it's actually what happened. Although the sea turtles are a powerful image of the effects of the incident, the photo of the smoke is a photo of the actual incident ion a larger scale and actually shows what is happening.

  8. The picture showing the one of the many cars bought by the string of casinos off the BP money has one of the best captions. It shows what the moeny from BP has gone to, and how it is a waste. The money should have gone towards helping the cleanup in the gulf, affecting the wildlife. This caption exploits what has gone on with the people wasting tens of millions of dollars going towards the cleanup. The picture with the man putting the turtle back into the ocean is not only a good picture, but the caption does well to summarize what is going on. I do have to say that the captions are a little bit long. In all, the captions do well to show us what is going on, and how we are not doing the right thing with the money.

  9. I also think the man releasing the sea turtles is also very significant. It shows the ending of the oil spill, and how signifivant it was.

  10. I think the picture of the biologist releasing the sea turtle, captures the story best. Everyones saying how the oil spill affected them, but no one takes the time to consider how it has affected the wild life who actually have to live in it. This picture captures that. I like how in the caption, it says what is happening, but goes more indepth about the subject. It explains how BP got tons of money to "clean up" the oil spill, but is blowing money left and right.

  11. The picture that captures the story best i think is the picture of the biologist letting the sea turtle go. This shows how the oil spill affected our ecosystem. These captions are newsworthy becasue they touch upon all the points needed to make a good caption.

  12. I agree with Jordan. When animals get hurt, humans seem to be more emotional. Having a picture of a sea turtle which could have been possibly harmed captures more emotion. This photo also tells the story best because the biggest part of the oil spill (or most important part) were the fact that the oil harmed so much sea life.

  13. I don't really think any of these pictures are that powerful. They should probably be showing how awful the oil spill was, instead of having pictures with people in it that look like they're posing. (They honestly look fake.) The picture of the smoke pouring into the sky is somewht powerful, because it shows what has happened, but it doesn't really show how awful it is. The picture of the man releasing the turtle back into the water is also only somewhat powerful...The picture was showing the good things that happened, not the bad. A healthy sea turtle is not as eye catching is one covered in oil. None of these photos are particuarly eye catching to me. The captions are fine, especially because they are done by AP proffesionals.

  14. I noticed in almost all of the photos, the beginning of the caption is original, but the second part of the caption is all the same.

  15. I agree with Emily and Jordan that the picture of the man letting the sea turtle back into the ocean captures the story the best. This is because it shows what happened in response to the oil spill and what people are doing now to help the situation. Like Jordan said, the animals wsere obviously affected by this oil spill and this picture illustrates how people are going about solving this issue.

  16. Another good photo is the one of the smoke coming out from the water. This is a good photo because it showes what happened during the oil spill and the effects it had on the water.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I do not think that the smoke coming out of the ocean captures the story the best, but I do think it is the most powerful because the picture clearly shows that harm is being done to the enviornment. The dark smoke makes the incident look extremely dangerous.

  18. I agree with Aarmon when he says the money should've gone to cleaning up the gulf rather than going out and gambling. Because the mess in the gulf is their fault, it is their responsibility to use as much money as they have readily available to clean up thier mess and hopefully revert some of the damage. This is also an effect caused by the actual event of the oil spill.

  19. I think that the photo that was the best was the guy putting the sea turtle back in the water. However, the photo was very cool, and I had had an idea of what was going on. The picture definatley told a story, but I have the opinion that you'd somewhat have to have a backround story. I didn't like the captions here or anywhere else I felt they wre too long, dragged on, and like someone else said lacked exciting details.

  20. I agree with Emma on how even though the picture with the sea turtles is a powerful image of what happend because of the oil spill, the picture with the smoke actually shows what went on during the oil spill that was the reason for the things that went on after it, for example the sea turtles.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I also agree with Gio, most of the photos don't really capture the story. (Besides the turtle one and the smoke one) The photos do look poesed and do not capture much emotion in them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree with Jossalyn, the picture with the biologist releasing the sea turtle. It does show how the oil spill affected our ecosystem a year ago, and is still affecting our ecosystem now.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Another good picture is the one with the tornad shaped cloud. This picture shows what exactly caused harm to the ecosystem.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with Armaan and Emma, the picture with the oil rig on fire is powerful on another level, it shows what happened but the turtle picture shows the effect. And Armaan is right it shows how the money is wasted on pointless things.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I also think that the smoke photo is significant. It was taken really nicely, and it shows how bad the spill actually was.

  26. The captions capture why the photos are newsworthy because they include the who, why, when, where, why, and how. I agree with McKenzie that the caption of the burning oil captures the photo best because the photo has very good quality, it gets your attention and appeals to your emotions. The caption explains why it is important and what is going on in the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with John on how the captions were way too long and they just kept dragging on which made me lose interest in looking at the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Like others, I don't think that many of the photos other than the one with the sea turtle. Without the captions, it's impossible to tell what is going on. I don;t think the story will really tell a story. To go along with the sea turtle picture, the one with the smoke coming off the water also tells a great story. The captins are a bit too long and I think they could be better if they were shorter.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree with Jordan and Gio. Pictures where it shows something happening or is taken when people are not expecting it tend to be more emotional.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with Gio the pictures look forced, theres emotion showed in some, but it doesnt look real. The captions are more informational and arent really interesting.

  31. The picture that i think captures the story best is the picture of the oil rig burning in the golf of mexico. The caption shows that it is newsworthy becuase it explains what was going on and it used the 5 W's and the how. This caption helps you understand the affect that happend in the golf of mexico.

  32. The captions highlight why the story is newsworthy because of them include a who, what whrere, where, when, why, and how. In this case, the most important fact included in these captions is the "what." This is the most important because it shows what the main issue going on is. For example, in the photo where the oil was being burned and the smoke was coming up, the caption was, "In this April 21, 2010 file photo, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig burns in the Gulf of Mexico. In the year since the Gulf oil spill, officials along the coast have gone on a spending spree with BP money, dropping tens of millions of dollars on gadgets, vehicles and gear _ much of which had little to do with the cleanup, an Associated Press investigation shows. The oil giant opened its checkbook while the crisis was still unfolding last spring and poured hundreds of millions of dollars into Gulf Coast communities with few strings attached." The "what" in this caption is that the oil rig burned in the Gulf of Mexico.

  33. I agree with Gio when he says that none of the pictures are that powerful. Without the captions, I probably wouldn't understand what the pictures were illustrating. You would think the pictures would have pictures from teh scene or how the animals were affected, not how they were let back into their home. The only picture that really illustrates what happened is the one with the smoke. While I still think there were better pictures that could have been taken, this is the most related to the situation. In addition, I feel as though all of the captions help us to understand what the pictures mean a great deal. This is because they include the who, what, when where, why, how, and a detailed description.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think a more powerful image could've been one of the shore with the actual damage the oil spill caused. I know of pictures of animals covered in the oil and they are really powerful.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I disagree with Gio because I think that the turtle picture was the most powerful because it was a happy ending. Instead of purely showing how horrible the oil spill was, at least this picture showed that we did manage to save some animals that would have been killed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Armaan and Emma. I think almost all people agree that the money should have gone to the cleanup instead of a car. However, like I had said before the photo itself needs some backround information, the caption provides that, but not in a professional fashion, I had already explained why earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree that the picture with the sea turtles is also powerful. It does not just capture the actual oil spill, but it is able to capture the effects of it which is very important. The caption tells what is going on and provides background information to give us a knowledge of the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah Jossalyn...There's four that really stand out...Three of the same blonde woman, and they look very fake, and then one of two people that looks somewhat fake...Those aren't eye catching.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with Kellyn, no one really thinks about the animals that have to live in the water when the oil spill happened. Therefore the picture that captures the story the most is the one with the biologist throwing the turtles back into the water. It shows that some people really do care about the animals that live in the water.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with Jordans opinion too, the best picture is of the biologist releasing the sea turtle into the ocean. I think that captions shouldnt be that long, because it takes away the readers interest. But the caption should still have all the nessassary details to tell a story. Which is what the caption writer did, but he did it in a short paragraph.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think if the captions were going to be as long as they were, it would've been better just to incorporate the pictures into a story. Each picture tells it's own story, and I think the excess amount of words kind of ruins the interpretation of the image. Everyone knows the general idea of the BP oil spill due to the stories, I don't think the captiions need to be as long as they were to expain something we already have background knowledge on.

  42. I agree with armaan when he says that the gulf of mexico picture with the smoke is the best picture and it defintitly is newsworthly

    ReplyDelete
  43. I also agree with Jess, the caption is not only very well written, but the picture is very important. I agree that the picture not only captures the actual oil spill, but it shows the negative effects.

  44. I agee with Emma about the length of the captions. I dont think that they needed to be that long but it did help understand the picture and what was going on in it

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree with John and Kellyn when they said some of the captions dragged on. Because the captions are so long, i loose some of my interest. I think the captions could be condensed but could still include the "who, what, where, when, why, and how," which makes it newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree with Jenna that without the captions, I would not have really realized why the photos were newsworthy just by looking at them. This shows why the captions on pictures are so important and needed in order to highlight what the photo is meant to be capturing.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The sea turtle picture happens to be the best picture because it is cute, shows how much they want to help, and what happened with the oil spill. This shows alot of feelings, if you had just a picture of the oil spill noone would really be inerested, but if you added someone saving an animal from the oil spill everyone would be interested. It depends on the picture, they need to tell details using objects in the picture.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree with Jessica and McKenzie when they said that the caption of the burning oil captures the photo because it captures you attention and is very powerful to look at.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think the photos of Darlene Kimball (the blonde woman) are honestly kind of dumb. Yes she is an owner of a seafood establishment and yhes she represents a large population of people that live off of the seasfood, but I think the photos of her are too forced and awkward looking. If you're in this situation you aren't going to be gazing out to the sea wondering what's going on. You would be doing everything possible to make a change, and not just hope one happnes. A more powerful image would've been one of her actually working or cleaning up something, not gazing out to the sea.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Like everyone else said, I think the only two photos that are newsworthy are the oil rig on fire and the person letting the sea turtle back in the water. While these still lack some of the components necessary for it to be newsworthy, they are better than the other pictures presented. Like others said, I feel as though a great deal of the pictures are forced. Foer example, the pictures of the blonde girl in the red, whit, and blue shirt look as if she is posing. In addition, they do not interest me whatsoever. Another example is of the car. A picture of a car has little to no relevance to the situation at hand and interests me very little.

  51. McKenzie, I don't really think the captions are that long. They're a perfect length in my eyes. They provide enough information, and they make me want to read more. I think they are doing their job and fulfililng their purpose.

  53. I agree with you all, I feel the captions could be shorter, and when there long it loses the readers intreast.

  54. I think the picture that captures the story the best is the picture of the oil rig burning. I feel this is a verypowerful photo because you get to see alittle bit of what actually happened. I also feel the picture of the turtle is affective to because it shows you how dangerous oil spills ore to animals.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Without these captions as Jenna said, I probably would not know what the picture has anything to do with. As Jess said, it is pretty cool that the negative afftects of the oil spill are shown but they would be very confusing without the captions.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Posign is not intresting at all, atleast to me. It doesnt capture a situation, or anything for that matter. WHoever phtographed these could have done a much better job.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Also, as Jess said, the captions are very well written. However, I feel that they could be just as good but condensed.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I also agree with Daphne Black Robson, when she said that the captions are very well written and the pictures are very powerful.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I also agree with emma. The length of the captions dont have to be that long because after a while they kind of get boring. although, the more you have in a caption the more you understand in the picture is I feel it is kind of bitter sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I do agree with McKenzie that the captions are a bit long. Yes, they are detailed and without them, I wouldn't understand the significance of the story, however, if the photographers had captured good photos, the length wouldn't be necessary. I think this is a situation where the pictures aren't powerful enough to speak for themselves so long captions are unfourtunately necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The captions highlight why the story is newswothry because they tell you every single thing that is happening in the picture.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I agree with Emma, the photos of the woman who is going out of business due to lack of money from BP are not very good. The picutres of her do not seem like they give an interesting angle, they are just her looking out the iwndow. They seem to posed, and not a natural picture. Also, the pictures of the sides of cars are not good because they are not at all interesting, and we do not see what they photographer is trying to tell us. The pictures are not newsworhty.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think we all agree that those captions were alittle to long, I feel if they want us to focus on a picture, they shouldnt give us a "book" to read to know why its important.
