Which photos do you think are the most powerful? What makes them so? What do these pictures present that others do not?
Due to the nature of this topic, you should have at least 4 posts.
I think the most powerful image is the first link, of the birds hanging on the wire with the clothes. I think this picture is powerful not only because it's the photo of the year, so it has prestige, but also because the image is so strange looking that it's capitvating. I feel like the animals and the clothes also represent the vast diversity of life we have in this country- the clothes representing regularity and the poultry representing an extremely foreign and unusual concept (for example, the subject topic itself, hanging birds next to your clothes that you're going to eat). I trepresents two opposties and that's what makes it more captivating than the other pictures.
ReplyDeleteThe poy photoes I believe are more powerful, simply because they capture the essence of the year rather than an interesting image of the week like the msnbc group. These pictures not only capture the essence of the year but they also represent that year in a respect, through captivating images of huge events that happened during the year. Each poy picture captures a powerful moment that will strike emotion in those who see it.
ReplyDeleteThe first few photographs on poyi.org are the most powerful because they show the struggles that some people have to go through in their everyday lives. The picture where a boy is being injected in the neck seems the most powerful to me because it looks like he needs this medicine in order to stay alive. He does not look healthy and seeing this picture makes me think about what it would be like to be in his position; to be barely alive and to require large doses of medicine injected directly into my veins.
ReplyDeleteI think the picture of what appears to be the mom, grandma, and daughter is the most powerful. This is because it captures the emotion of them perfectly for the mom is crying, the daughter looks worried, and the grandma looks worn out. It captivates the viewer because it makes them wonder the story behind such a photo and what happened to the people in it to make them look so sad. This picture shows the emotion of the situation that happened which not all the other photos do. It captures a real life moment when everything isd not perfect and people are suffering.
ReplyDeleteThe photos that are most powerful are the ones of people. Like the ones of people and children from other countries that maybe have been affected by a natural disaster or political/ war problems. These kind of photos make people want to look at the photos and things like that.
ReplyDeleteI think the poy photos are powerful. They capture more of real life things and emotion while the other link is just popular images. The picture i found most important was the picture of the soldier; his wife and the baby and they are sitting on the floor cring. I could almost feel the pain just by looking at the picture.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think the link: The week in photos are more powerful because the photos are more real looking and of people. THey look the least edited and stuff.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Emma when she says that the boy being injected with a needle in his neck is one of the most powerful. This is because this is something he appears to deal with alot. Like Emma said, he probably has to have these injections in order to stay healthy or alive. The people in the picture are calm but the situation is not. Imagine having injections in your neck. It's amazing what some people have to go through. I think another reason why this image is so powerful is because it makes the viewer think. It makes them go deeper than the surface of the picture to determine the story behind it.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the most important and powerful photo out of all the ones i viewed was the one with the woman throwing her arms up with a dove flying above her. This photo is very significant because a dove is a sign of peace, and this woman is part of the many people on this earth who wants peace throughout. The bird can be a symbol of something good that's going to happen, and this is why i feel that photo is most important.
ReplyDeleteI think a really powerful photo is the one of the model falling. This is such a rarity in that industry, to see someone whose a professional in that subject fall so ungracefully. It's shocking, but it also represents our country in a way. We go so long witholding such a high name and a professional attittude, yet sometimes we fall. And when we do, it is shocking just like it would be for a model to fall. America is a model for other countries. To see us fall would be a shock.
ReplyDeleteI also noticed that the poy's are either photos of devestation or great joy, with no in between. This is because those opposites portray the best and the worst of human nature, which shows the year very thoroughly.
I think that the most powerful pictures are the first link. They not only show a story, but they also show emotions unlike the second link. Many of the pictures re unbelievable and make you shocked or wonder about whats going on, they make you want to actually read that article, while the pictures from the second article do not. Each of those pictures captures even a happy emotion or sad emotions that make you actually feel whatever the people in the pictures feel.
ReplyDeleteThe msnbc website has some really nice pictures too. I think they are really cool to look at. However, they do not send off as strong of a message as the poyi ones do. Although the msnbc pictures look more realistic and are actual pictures that coorrespond with the articles from the same website, the issues that these pictures deal with are not nearly as important as the pictures from msnbc.
ReplyDeleteI think that all of these photos are pretty powerful since they all convey a message that effect you emotionally. The black and white photo from the p.o.y. with the scared boy being held between other men is one of the most powerful because he looks so afraid and innocent just looking for some sort of help to save him.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with many when they say that the poy photos are much more powerful than those found on msnbc.com. This is because the poy photos are a collection of powerful, captivating, and interesting pictures found throughout the year while the ones on msnbc are simple ones that were found during a week or so. They are also much more intriguing to me and make me want to find out the story behind the picture, while only some of the msnbc pictures do.
ReplyDelete*I meant to say I agree with Emily about the picture of the boy being injected with the needle, not Emma.*
I think that the first links photos, were a lot better, and more powerful than the second link. I think that it summed up the year pretty good, and it showed images that alot of people haven't seen, or haven't realized the seriousness of them.
ReplyDeleteI think that the most powerful pictures were in the first link. They captured images of things you either have never thought of happening or didn't really think could be quite possible. They are much more realistic than those in the second link, which just showed what was sor of going on rather than what it was like to be in that situation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Emily. Although the poy images are really beautiful, the msnbc photos are sitll good too. They correspond with a story and still capture the essence of that story. Although the poy photos are edited, they need to be edited because the editing enhances the story by making the pictures sharper and stand out more. This enhances the power of the picture.
ReplyDeleteMany of these photos are powerful, but the most powerful, in my opinion is the one where a U.S. solider is carrying a baby. I think that because that picture shows that U.S. soliders care about children in other countries.
ReplyDeleteI personally think the most powerful image is the one called "Facing Accusations." I think its the most powerful because it shows how other countries deal wih accusations compared to how the United States does.
ReplyDeleteI think that one of the best pictures was one of the best pictures were the ones of the african american children either crying, locked up in a cell, or starting riots. These types of pictures open up the viewers eyes to wahts happening in other countries and it makes us appreciate what we have.
ReplyDeleteThe photos are powerful and have a lot of meaning. The photos show things that happen everyday but in different ways. Death, struggle, and cruelness. They all give off different emotions.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, I feel as though the poy pictures are more powerful because when I was skimming through them I was shocked by the majority of them and could of sat her for a while just staring at them. The msnbc pictures on the other hand are good, but more to the point and obvious. I felt as though there was not much of a deeper story behind the msnbc ones, while there was behind the poy ones. Like Jess said, all of the pictures are powerful because they all effect us emotionally. They all force us to think.
ReplyDeleteuh ignore the second one of the best pictures...
ReplyDeleteI think that the most powerful picture was the one of the two American soldiers, one wass dying, and the other was still alive. The soldier on the left had cuts and blood all over his face while he was recieving oxygen from a mask, and he was looking off into the distance with a kind of helpless look. There is a soldier directly to the right of him, and he is holding the dying soldiers hand, crying a little. This is powerful because it shows the relations between American soldiers, and plus, this is a very emotional moment between two people, captured on film. The detail in their faces is amazing as well.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Daphney because I think that the pictures from the second website still intrigue their audience, the issues just do not seem as important. The pictures from the first website seem like horrible problems while the second website's pictures look like the article will be more upbeat.
ReplyDeleteI think that the most powerful image, was the one were a group of atleast 10 were all hanging on the the helicopter, preventing it from leaving. I don't know why they did that, maybe they wanted to get out of their third world enviorment, or maybe the helicopter had supplies that they wanted, it is impossible to say without knowing the complete story, but I definatley would like to know the whole story, and the image captured my attention, and kept me wanting to know more.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenna and Emma on how the picture of the boy getting injected with a huge needle is very powerful. As Jennna stated, that boy probably needs to take several of those injections a day just to stay alive. This world is coming down to where there are so many sicknesses and diseases that there's way too many to count. The fact that our society has to inject a large needle into a small boys neck is sad.
ReplyDeleteThe photos from the Olympics and of great accomplishments, are equally powerful. They make us want to strive to what there doing and give us hope when something goes bad.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jordan about the MSNBC photos looking less edited, i think both sites had poweful images. The only thing is that MSNBC is the week in review, it makes all of the images seem real.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daphne the pictures with african american children that are crying, locked up, or starting riots are powerful. Also it does help the viewers realize whats happening in other countries.
ReplyDeleteI think the most powerful images are those of the children who look like they are starving, those who have no family support and that are poor. These are the most powerful photos because I know that if I was in their postition, I would be heart broken. I praise these children especially considering they find out a way to live through all of their difficult times. These picturesbring out emotion and feelings where as some of the others do not. These pictures some people can relate to; not literally but they can have feelings becasue they know how hard it would be if they were in the childrens' places.
ReplyDeleteEven though the poy pictures are edited, I feel as though they are still more powerful. Like others mentioned, it is this editing that enhances the phot to correspond with the sotory even more and increase the emotions of the viewers. For example, some of the pictures in black and white expressed a more depressing situation because there was no color.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daphne, the most powerful images are those of the african american children locked up in a cell. It really does force us to realize what we have and how fortunate we are to have it. It also depicts the future of the world, because these are children. How we treat our children will determine the future of the world, and if our children are being locked up, then that doesn't say very much about our future when it comes to world peace and freedom.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daphne, The pictures do open up the veiwers eyes to whats happening. I think these pictures do make us understand and want to help. For an example by just sending can foods makes a difference in other people's life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenna, I feel that the poy pictures are just better than msnbc ones, and that I could just sit there for a while looking at the pictures, and seeing what is happening around the world.
ReplyDeleteI think the pictures on the first link are the most powerful, because they capture the images of many of the year;s disasters. One of the most powerful pictures I felt was the overhead picture of the oil spill. I think this is the most powerful because it holds the most prominence, as it brought in so much attention from around the world. It is different to see what it looks like from an overhead view of the spill rather than simply the statistics.
ReplyDeleteI definately agree with Brittney on how these pictures make you feel many different emotions because you are viewing peoples struggles around the world, and it's very sad to see what they have to go through.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daphne that the p.o.y. pictures are the most powerful because they're much more realistic. The pictures that look like real life are the ones that we can relate to the most so they really make us think about what's going on in the photos which reaches out to our emotions. For example the black and white photo of the African Americans behind the bars I felt was really powerful. They looked into the camera, desperatly looking for a way to escape. This speaks to the viewer because its like you can feel them reaching out for you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Britney also, the first link makes us think more about the topic and gives us emotions whereas the second link just says whats happening and is very to the point and unemotional.
ReplyDeleteDaphne brings up a good point when she says these pictuers shows what certain society's have come to. It is heartbreaking to see children participating in riots. It also is sad to see all of the tragedies to families such as people being burned to death.
ReplyDeleteAnother set of pictures that I feel is powerful is the ones with the snow, and the car rolling over in the blizzard. I think this is powerful because it has proximity, as the snowstorms of the Northeast also include us. It was one of the worst years of snowfall, and so many people suffered from the blizzards.
ReplyDeleteI agree with McKenzie, the most powerful ones are the pictures that have starving children, and those who are poor and have no family.
ReplyDeleteI'd also have to say that the balck and white pictures are pretty powerful, because they give you a certain feeling. That feeling is hard to describe, but when you look at it, you really find yourself paying closer attention to the details in it
ReplyDeleteThe pictures show me a big part of what's happening around the world just by looking at a picture. A picture shows alot more than we think, just what is in the picture always tells us something.
ReplyDeleteThe poy photo's defintaly have more of a deeper meaning to them. They show photos that really make you think about the subject it potrays.
ReplyDeleteLike mostly everyone else is saying, the poy pictures are more relatable and remind us of the constant struggles elsewhere in the world. They make us feel forutnate for what we have and remind us of the people w2ho are not as lucky as us. Not only can a story be found within them, but a lesson as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Britany and Daphne, the first link's picutres were a whole lot more emotional, and really made you feel for some of the people in the photos, whereas the msnbc's photos were vurtually emotionless.
ReplyDeleteJenna brings up a good point with the black and white expressing a depressing situation, and I also agree with Gio when he says it causes you to look at thos pictures more clotsely and pay attention to detail, which is why the distraction of color was removed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jossalyn. The MSNBC photos were not as capturing as the photos from Poyi. There were taken for a news story, not really to capture as much interest as the story they accompanied. The Poyi images were breathtaking because of how terrible or wonderful the events were that were taking place in the photo. They forced you to see outside of normal, and expanded your horizons.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daphne on how the pictures of the african american children locked up in a cell are very powerful. Just knowing that these small kids starve and just sit there in a dark cell all day everyday is heartbreaking and makes you want to just go and help them.
ReplyDeleteI did not even realize that some pictures may be photoshoped as Jordan said. This makes me wonder how far did the editors go to make the pictures as good as they are.
ReplyDeletePhotos I also think are the most power, none in specific, but the ones where young children are the main focal point of it. I can't really give any specific photos though..
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daphne when she says that we are witnesses to other society's and the turmoil they are experiencing. We see children taking part in riots and rebellions, and takikng action. While they are taking a step to better their nation, those riots can get violent, and its dangerous for them to take part. The pictures of the riots show emotion in them, and capture the essence of what is going on.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Audrey that the photo of the soldier carrying a baby off the field is one of the most powerful. It shows compassion and represents the U.S millitary and they're strength and bravery.
ReplyDeleteThe most powerful images are the ones regarding sad situations. This is because these make you feel depper emotions. While ones such as the olympic photos show the accomplishments of some, they don't allow me to put much thought into them or reflect upon them.
ReplyDeleteAlso the photos that are in black and white seem more powerful than ones in color. Depending on the type of message that the photo is giving.
ReplyDeleteI have two different pictures that I find really powerful and interesting. My first is on the first website, It is a picture of a husband in the army a wife hugging him and there child sleeping in there arms. This i feel is really strong, because it represents all the families that have love ones in the army. I feel it has a really touching meaning and should be the picture of the year.
ReplyDeleteMy next picture is more interesting to look at .. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41062293/ns/news/displaymode/1247/?beginSlide=1
it is picture 8 in this link.
I feel that its a really cool picture because you dont usually see leopards attacking people on the street everyday.
I think that the most powerful pictures were found on the first link. They tell a story and show a lot of different emotions. My favorite one was the one of the tiger walking towards the photographer. The colors were bold, and it captured my attention.
ReplyDeleteJordan, I see what you mean. Just because the picture has a starving child in it, makes it catch the pure essence of how awful the world is, contrary to popular belief. You'd be lucky to see stuff like that on these government controlled, propeganda filled news shows. Those pictures of the dying kids show what its really about. There's no false caption that feeds you some lie about what it is. It's the pure essence of the problem.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Armaan, the pictures that show blizzards and snow are very powerful. Those pictures show how in some countries there are blizzards that can be very extreme and snow that can become that bad.
ReplyDeleteIt is clear that some of these photos are edited, mostly the ones with explosions in the background. However, I do not think that this determines the intensity of the picture. I think these pictures are trying to send a message about the problems we are facing today.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Jordan, the black and white photos had a more powerful meaning than a lot of the ones in color.
ReplyDeleteThe photoes that i think are most powerful are the photoes in the first link because they some shows emotion and others show accomplishments. The photo that i thought had the most emotion was the photo of the family crying. The photo that i thought showed accomplishments was the photo of the canadian hockey team winning the gold medal.
ReplyDeleteA picture that I think is powerful to the U.S. is the one of the soldier sitting with his wife next to him, and baby in his hands crying. The picutre here has so much emotion in it, and shows how the war takes such a toll on the army. While we understand how people in the war undergo difficult times to say the least, I don't think we really know what it is like until we witness pictures like this one, and we see the emotion in it.
ReplyDeleteI feel out of the two websites given, the second one was most powerful. It gave many pictures that were recent, and it also gave descriptions to every picture. I thought that was good because we got to know exactly what was happening during that time.
ReplyDeleteI understand what Emily is saying, but I think the photographs are so well-edited, its hard to tell which ones are real, and which ones have been fixed. I agree with her opinion on how the pictures are trying to explain issues we are facing today.
ReplyDeleteThe POY images are mostly about terrible things happening to people in difficult situations, thats why people are so captivated by them. We dont normally see those kind of pictures in magazines or books or on facebook, the MSNBC pictures are mokre upbeat, there are some things that arent so good either but the POY images are definitly more emotional but the MSNBC images are more recent.
ReplyDeleteI feel that specificaly, the most powerful pictures when one little girl is looking up with a helpless face and little boys nearby covered with blood. This girl had debris all over her. There was no adult supervision and the children looked very poor. This is the most powerful becasue it is so sad to see children having no happiness and having to face such tragedies at such a young age. If I was in this little girl's position, I honestly do not know how I would handle it. Knowing what the average family gets and takes for granted, it makes me feel guilty becasue kids in other places do not have the chane to have the luxuries we have today. This pictue really connected to me- the viewer. The young girl's eyes really attracted me to the picture, it made me have more feeligns toward the little kids. To see the little girl sufering is bad enough, not to mention the boys in the background, bleeding, looking for help.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jordan, how the pictures with children were more effective. Its well known that there are starving people in the world but when you actually see it, even in just a picture, it affects you way more. Especially when children are portrayed in bad situations, and in the Poyi photos, you really feel sad for who ever is in the picture.
ReplyDeleteHayley, I'd have to say the first one was better. The angles and pictures taken applied to a lot of the major problems going on right now.
ReplyDeleteThe photo that was also pretty powerful was the photo with the guy with the horn going through his chin. The photo is powerful becuase it shows the danger that can happen anytime and any place no matter what is going on.
ReplyDeleteHayley; I think the pictures in the second link were okay; but lacked emotion and were just based off of recent news.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, not every picture is worth a thousand words, but the ones of the african men and women in jail, or the children, were being saved, were certainly worth a lot more than a thousand words.
ReplyDeleteNow that I think about it, some of the happy pictures are cool too. They are quite interesting at the percise timing of the carmara beign snapped.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Nick when he said the horn going through a guys face is powerful. If I ever had a horn in my face I would not even know what to do. Its sad to see his face get ruined, however he signed up for the sport.
ReplyDeleteKaylee, I completly agree when you say every picute has major impact but some just have mroe.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the photo with the horn going through the man's face is powerful. Although it is a little distrubing, it is also interesting at the same time and really does grab your attention.
ReplyDeleteNick and McKenzie are right. The timing of the camera capturing a moment says a lot more than you'd think. Nick's chosen picture depics the danger that can occur at any time while McKenzie is right when she says happy moments that are captured at the precise moments are extroadinary.
ReplyDeleteThe more depressing picture spoke to me more than the happier one, I'm not quite sure why, I think its maybe because they had more emotion.
ReplyDeleteI agree with mckenzie, the picture of the children starving is a very sad picture. If I was ever put in that situation I wouldn't know what to do with myself. The picture also connects to those TV commercials about children that need food and water. Sometimes I cant watch those commercials because they are so sad.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kaylee. These pictures can be interperted in so many diffrent ways.
ReplyDeleteLike Mckenzie stated, the sad pictures of the children effect you a great deal. This is because every sad situation is even more sad when it deals with a child. Nobody should have to deal with such a horrible sitaution, especially an innocent and hepless child. These pictures make me want to help people in such tragic situations. The phpotographers did a phenomenol job of capturing the emotion of the people in them.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures in the first link definitly present more emotion than the pictures in the second link because most of the pictures in the first link show pictres that are all significant in their own way. The pictures in the first link definitly show a lot more emotion than the pictures in the second link. They both have photos that show accomplishment too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with jenna too when she said that the sad pictures of the children effect you a great deal.
ReplyDeleteI also think that some of these phtos were pretty nasty to look at.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Aick some of these photos are really har to look at, one inparticular is when the bulls horn went right through the riders chin. It was really gross.
ReplyDeleteOverall the most touching photos are the ones that have to do with kids, they are either really fun to look at or really depressing and sad.
ReplyDelete
