Discuss a major sporting event of this academic year and why you think it is so.
I think that the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event that has occured so far this academic year. This Super Bowl was one of the most watched Super Bowls of all time and even though the Patriots were not in it, I was excited to see the game. I think that this is a major sporting event because it is the last game of the entire football season, and alot of people like to watch football. It is always on a Sunday 'Super Bowl Sunday' so most people are free to watch the game without other activities getting in the way.
The superbowl is probably the most important event that happened in our country. The Packers and the Steelers are some of the most watched teams; considering they have have ALOT of fans. Also football is our country's major sport, right above baseball.
I guess i'll say it is the Superbowl. That is the most watched sport on television. It is also greatly antispated by football fans which take up alot the population.
The super bowl. It seemed like it got alot of people to watch it ; not only becuase of the fot ball game, but also becuase of the commericals that were ariing that day to.
Keep in mind that you need to have at least 3 posts and actually discuss with others what they think is the biggest sporting event. A sporting event may be something for the school, state, or country.
I definitly agree with Marta about the superbowl. it really did gain the most energy and attention. Every year no matter whos in the super bowl, it is always the most enegetic game to watch on television
I agree with most of the people who commented, the Superbowl was, in my opinion, the major sporting event of this academic year. I think that because a lot of people watched it. Every year the Superbowl has the most viewers. The Superbowl has more viewers than the World Series, and other sporting events. Plus a lot of people seemed to be interested in football and watch football for the entire season. Also they are excited for the Superbowl.
I guess i'm going to say the superbowl. The two teams that were playing were really good and it was an amazing game to watch. It was the most watched sport on tv and alot of people were excited for it.
Like most everyone else said, I think that the biggest sporting event of this academic year was the superbowl. This is because mostly everyone makes time to watch it and enjoys it. Like Shelby said, the Packers and the Steelers are two really good football teams and have a great deal of fans. Many watch it, whether it's for the commercials, the halftime, or the game itself.
I agree with nick about the highschool hockey state championships. Alot of people love hockey and to watch our own students take part in the game is fun and its an exciting sport.
I'm going to have to say that the biggest event wasn't the Super Bowl or March Madness, but MLB's opening day. This is a highly anticipated season, with the champion San Franscisco Giants trying to repeat and many teams continuing to build from the ground up, like the Tampa Bay Rays. There are also some teams that are expected to do fairly well this year, who may not have done so well last season like the Washington Nationals. This year is especially exciting for Red Sox fans, due to the many off season deals such as the aquirments of Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez.
The Fifa World Cup Championship is one of the biggest sporting events of the year. It brings together so many people around the world to watch and support their own country. It is so prominent. They always so poeple in bars getting together and going nuts.
I think that the biggest sporting event so far this year is the Super Bowl by far. In the last blog (TMZ) it was discussed that the Super Bowl was watched by 1/3 of the population, or 111 million people. That's an enormous number as opposed to all other ordinary sports shown on tv, and football is a popular sport as it is. THe fact that it's the biggest football game of the year just makes it even more popular.
I agree with Tara. The world series probably comes as second best when it comes to biggest sporting events in the US. This is probably because new England is the only place where baseball is really popular. Everywhere else, football reigns.
I agree with Nick about the world series, because baseball, as well as football is very well liked in America. Actually, I feel like most people prefer baseball over football.
While I agree that the high school hockey state championship has a great deal of fans and the world series is a popular sport event, I don't think that they are the "biggest". This is because I feel as though more people watch the Superbowl and the superbowl consists of professional players while the hocket state tournament is only high school players. In addition, the world series did not occur this academic year.
I also agree with what Jenna said, a lot of people just watch the superbowl for the hilarious commercials that are often designed and anticipated all year. The expense of these commercials is enormous, and that alone draws in an audience.
The Super Bowl for me, was the biggest sporting event of this school year. It always is. It has milions of viewers every year, and the number always grows. Its also very entertaining to watch. (I like the players) The commercials are always the best. Theres parties and tons of fun. It also has affect on traffic, bets, and fights. Its always a good time.
There hasnt been many sports events this year besides the super bowl. The world series and the Fifa world cup championship are the other two big sporting events.
I don't agree with Gio when he said that MLB's opening day was the major event this year, because it is really only important to those who are really into baseball. Most people don't want to see the opening day, and they certainly don't prefer it over the Super Bowl.
I agree with Armaan about the Fifa world cup. I remember over the summer I went to Puerto Rico. every bar with a TV was showing the world cup and every bar was overflowing with people. Energy ran really high while the games took place.
I have to say that the World Series would come in second as the major sporting event of the year. A lot of people seemed to watch that too. Plus a lot of people like to watch baseball throughout the season.
I disagree with Emily, I feel people in the U.S. prefer football over baseball. Back in October a World Series game 2, and the NFL's Monday Night Football featuring two of the NFLs lesser teams, got more ratings than the world series game.
I also agree with Armaan when he says that the FIFA world cup championship is a rather large sporting event. While I don't think that this is the biggest sporting event, I do agree that a great deal of people watch it, especially those who prefer soccer over sports such as baseball and football.
Towards those that preferred baseball over football, I can see why you would think this is going to be a highly popular sport. Baseball is the "american past time" and a lot of people only watch the superbowl for the commercials. For the sports centered fanatics who are in it for th elove of the game, baseball is definitely going to be a hugely popular sport this spring / summer as it usually is every year. Although there may not be one particular event that's popular, I think over the season baseball will have accumulated more views.
The Fifa world cup seems to be a major sporting event of the year. There are a lot of TV stations that play that. Also it seems like a lot of people like to watch that.
In addition, I think that the superbowl is the craziest sporting event of the academic year. This is because people anticipate it for a while, and once it arrives, people gather around their television rooting for their favorite team.
Jenna's right, a lot of anticipation is important in the popularity of a particular event. Any major game, whether it be school wide or nation wide, if it is anticipated it will probably get more views and be talked about a lot more.
Like many said, it is undoubtedly the biggest for the U.S. So many people get together, and the ratings go through the roof. Also, the superbowl is famous for the great funny comomercials.
Actually, I don't think that the Super Bowl is the most important to me. This is mainly beause of proximity. For example a game such as the boys basketball senior night, which was last night relates more to me. This event was held at my school with students I know who represents my school. However, if the Patriots were in the Super Bowl, it would be a little different. The Patriots represents my home town. Therefore, proximity would have a bigger role. Nevertheless, the Super Bowl does have many fans. This year, mostly people from Green Bay and Pittsburg attended the game. Still many football fans watched due to football being a very popular sport. The Super Bowl does have a lot of importance but so does a Linoln High School Senior Nigh basketball game because it is closer to my home.
The thing about baseball (Emma) is that, although i LOVE to watch the Red Sox, there's too many games. 162 a year is too much. So if i miss three or four weeks straight of games, i dont really care because theres 120 more games left. But I do have to say, when the Red Sox are on TV, its something like 12% of all TV's on are watch ing that game. That's a lot. And just ONE team.
I do agree with Emma when she says that Baseball is the "american past time". Even though it may not be as boradcasted as the superbowl, many anticipate it for a while and love to watch it. It's hard to determine whether or not the superbowl or the world series is the "biggest" sporting event of the academic year. I think it depends on the person, what they prefer, and their particular opinion on the topic.
yes people watch the football game but alot of people like both to watch the football game and watch the commericals. People pay alot of money for there commercial to be on when the superbowl is on because alot of people watch the superbowl.
I agree with what you're saying Gio, 162 games a year is way too much. But because of the frequency of the games, chances are a lot more games will be viewed. Also, when 12% of all tvs are watching a red sox game, imagine if the red sox got in the world series again. It would be huge and so many more people would watch it. But Jenna is right, again, it does depend on the audience.
And still arguing that the baseball season is going to be the biggest event because on Opening Day, nearly every baseball fan will be watching because its the first time they would be able to see their team for almost a whole year.
Plus there are still many people who never miss a game.
I agree with Mckenzie because as she said, she likes sports stories with proximity for example the boys senior night which was last night. That to me is more exiting because i can relate to it since i live in lincoln and i also play basketball for the same school as these guys.
I agree that there are other sporting events that are more prominent due to proximity. If RI was included in something, it would be more important than a national event.
Tara brought up a good point when she said the Super Bowl may attract many veiwers. All of these veiwers however are from all around, not just from where I live. However, fans at a basketball game at my shool attracts fans from my school and other fans from nearby towns in the same state.
With all the people who said the superbowl is the major sporting event, i disagree. Although it is one of the most watched sporting events of all time, i feel the sporting events we can relate to are more important. Some people go crazy about the superbowl but i feel they go way out of hand because it is just a football game.
I agree with Mckenzie again on how she said she would agree that the Red Sox and Patriots games are the major sporting events, but only if we didn't believe in good sports stories because of proximity.
I agree with a lot of my classmates when they say the superbowl was a major sporting event of the year so far..not only was it newsworthy for many reasons but a lot of people watch/ attended this event.
Although i also agree with what mckenzie is saying .. Senior night is a very big deal for any sport in Lincoln High School. Its a night where we honor those seniors who have been playing that sport for along time and celebrating there last home game with them. I feel these senior nights are something a lot of people look foward tocoming too.. and im also really happy we celebrate things like this.
I also agree with Armaan when he says the fifa world cup is a big sporting event but I still feel the Superbowl is the biggest event and will always be the biggest event.
The Superbowl seemed to gain the most energy and attention. It was also considered the most watched sporting event.
ReplyDeleteThe high school hockey state championship always has a big crowd and the game gets intense to wacth.

ReplyDeletethe world series is the second biggest sporting event

ReplyDeleteThere hasnt been many sports events this year besides the super bowl. The world series and the Fifa world cup championship are the other two big sporting events.
ReplyDeleteAnother event thats coming soon is the NFL draft picks, that will be happening in April, its highly anicipated and alot of people will be watching it.
ReplyDeleteThe superbowl is also the only game that had happened so far in 2011; therefore making it most important.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with Gio when he said that MLB's opening day was the major event this year, because it is really only important to those who are really into baseball. Most people don't want to see the opening day, and they certainly don't prefer it over the Super Bowl.

ReplyDeleteAnother sporting event that is important is the USA cross country championships. Though not many people have heard about that.
ReplyDeleteNice statistics John.
ReplyDeleteTowards those that preferred baseball over football, I can see why you would think this is going to be a highly popular sport. ReplyDeleteI also agree with Armaan and Marta, the FIFA World Cup was also a very popular sporting event espiceally with people in South America.
ReplyDeleteI think the World Series and the Super Bowl are equal in watchers. The Fifa World cup is mostly watched in Southern states; like Florida.
ReplyDeleteI agree with tara, Maybe there is some people who watch the superbowl because of the comersials but the superbowl is a big event so maybe not.
ReplyDeleteJenna's right, a lot of anticipation is important in the popularity of a particular event. Any major game, whether it be school wide or nation wide, if it is anticipated it will probably get more views and be talked about a lot more.
