If you were covering the new Govenor's speech, what would you consider the most important quotes? What is his message? http://www.wpri.com/dpp/news/local_news/providence-full-text-lincoln-chafee-inauguration-speech

  1. If I were a reporter covering the Governo' speech, i would emphasize a few quotes. " Last November, we showed the nation what a civil state can mean. Angel Tavares was elected mayor of Providence. David Cicilline was elected to Congress, and Jim Langevin was re-elected. Each of these men have been bold pioneers in their own way, and are testimony to the open minds and hearts of Rhode Islanders." and "And so I say today to every Rhode Islander…the only way we can move forward is to move forward together." I think the point he was trying to get across was that with cooperation and determination, the people of Rhode Island can make the state the best it can be. He makes it a point to bring up our united front and strong history, "We were the first colony to stand up to the crown by signing the Declaration of Independence. And we were the last to ratify the Constitution..."

  2. Oh, and heres my second comment.

  3. "In short, our politics have not lived up to our ideals. That must change. The time of irresponsibility has ended." This quote represents his message of a need for change, which he repetetively says he wants and will strive for.

  4. "Let us begin an era of political collaboration, of cultural and ethnic acceptance, of shared sacrifice and, most importantly, of faith and trust in each other. If we do, Rhode Island will most certainly prosper once more.

And so I say today to every Rhode Islander…the only way we can move forward is to move forward together. " Chafee also wants Rhode Island to become more unified, which will essentially promote progress in our state.

  5. If I was covering Lincoln Chaffees speech, the first quote i would use would be: "I believe a second chance begins at this very moment…. not just for me, but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island and for each and every one of her citizens. "
I would use that quote because it shows some of his motives as govener.

  6. I agree with Emma im her second paragraph, Chafee wants Rhode Island to become more unified, he believes that in turn will make the state move forward.

  7. "Today, I ask all Rhode Islanders to join me in boldly reaffirming Roger Williams’ vision of a “civil state” … a vibrant, diverse community that is free of political, cultural and ethnic division. For if we rekindle the vision that created our heritage, there is nothing this state and her people cannot achieve."

Chafee wants to revert to our basic heritage, because sometimes just remembereing where you came from humbles a group and helps them get back on track. Chafee has set out many goals for Rhode Island and many standards he has set, so hopefully we'll be able to meet them for the better of our community.

  8. The second quote i would choose would be:
"In his words, Rhode Island was like a ship of state, with many different types of passengers, free to worship and think as they pleased, but obligated to work to defend the ship from danger, and to follow a correct course to the right destination."
THis quote shows that Rhode Island was founded and accepted people of all differnt races and religons, versus some other states and countries at that time.

  9. If I was covering this speech, the first quote I would use is "I believe a second chance begins at this very moment…. not just for me, but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island and for each and every one of her citizens. Today, I humbly ask each Rhode Islander to join me in embarking on a new era of opportunity for Rhode Island. I pledge to devote every ounce of energy I have to this task. Indeed, I will not rest until we reclaim the promise that lay in the heart of our founder Roger Williams some 375 years ago."

I would choose this quote because it shows that he wants to change and he strongly believes that we can. It also shows that he is devoted to this change, claiming that he will not rest until it happens.

  10. If I was covering the governers speech I would think that the most important quotes are "I pledge to devote every ounce of energy I have to this task.". This quote is saying that Governer Chafee will try his hardest to make sure that Rhode Island will live up to its expectations. Another quote is "I believe a second chance begins at this very moment…. not just for me, but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island and for each and every one of her citizens". I believe that in this quote Chafee is sort of trying to suck up to the people watching the speech by saying that we live in "our wonderful state of Rhode Island". But, he is admitting that everyone has made mistakes and that his term will mean that he can redeem himself.

  11. I also agree with Jordan, her quote shows how Rhode Island is a state of different race, religions, and backgrounds. It has always been that way, but most other states haven't.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I also agree with Emma's opinion about one of her quotes about Rhode Island becoming more unified. Chafee's reasoing about being uniffied is very true because thats how a state strives, with the unification of the people in the society.

    ReplyDelete
  13. If i were a reporter i would use this particular quote because I feel it sums up Chaffees goal as governer, "In short, our politics have not lived up to our ideals. That must change. The time of irresponsibility has ended." This shows that Chaffee wants things to change, and that he as well as other politicians, have to stop making excuses and live up to their word.

  14. I also agree with Emma about Rhode Island becomeing more unified..

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree with what Jordan said when she used the quote about second chances. It does set the general feeling of the speech as well as the ideals that Chafee wants to set.

  16. Today, I ask all Rhode Islanders to join me in boldly reaffirming Roger Williams’ vision of a “civil state” … a vibrant, diverse community that is free of political, cultural and ethnic division. For if we rekindle the vision that created our heritage, there is nothing this state and her people cannot achieve.

This is a qoute that shows Chaffee is intent on keeping all the different races, beliefes and people together. He doesn't want the state to be divided by anything. As to if he can follow through with these intentions, i don't really think so

  17. The second quote that I would use is "In every segment of our society, we have tolerated something that Roger Williams did not – a refusal to do the work necessary to correct our course, and an acceptance of a fractious society that emphasizes division over common purpose. In short, our politics have not lived up to our ideals. That must change. The time of irresponsibility has ended."

I would use this quote because here, Chafee identifies the problem and explains that this problem must change and our politics must live up to our ideals.

  18. Lincoln Chafee was trying to tell all of the Rhode Islanders that he is going to restore Rhode Island and help it become the state that the founders of this state; Roger Williams, had intended it to be. He specifically says, "...I will not rest until we reclaim the promise that lay in the heart of our founder Roger Williams some 375 years ago."

  19. When Chafee starts off with saying that we are being given a second chance from here on. This means that we have made mistakes in the past, and Lincoln Chafee is going to do everything he can to make Rhode Island a better state. In many instances, Chafee looks to our past for our founders, and tries to uphold their principles. Chafee tries to establish a connection with each Rhode Island, as he talks about how we have all felt failure. Also, he says that our ideals as a state must change, and he is devoted to making us better.

  20. If i as a reporter were covering govenor Chafee's speach, i would interpret the meaning of the speach as saying that he will fill in as the spot of our govenor for our state and run it as well as he can. He believes that everyone makes mistakes including him, but we all deserve second chances. One of the most important quotes i feel Chafee states would be, "I believe a second chance begins at this very moment…. not just for me, but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island and for each and every one of her citizens." As a stated before, he is willing to take sacrifices for our state and if he makes mistakes we should all be willing to forgive and forget, just like he would do for our mistakes we make. Another quote i feel was important is when he said, "I pledge to devote every ounce of energy I have to this task. Indeed, I will not rest until we reclaim the promise that lay in the heart of our founder Roger Williams some 375 years ago." With that quote it makes me think he is going to use all his energy to run our state to his best ability, and that is the type of govenor Rhode Island needs.

  21. Our independence is written onto every page of Rhode Island history. When Roger Williams came to these beautiful shores in 1636, he instantly made this the most democratic place in America, simply by welcoming other dissenters, and by creating a new form of government that valued tolerance and consensus over orthodoxy and compulsion.

this quote is particulary good because hes pointing out good things about rhodeisland

  22. "With inspiration from our past, and confidence in our future, let us all walk together, with sure and steadfast steps, toward the promise of tomorrow. " I think that this statement is a very important part of Chafee's speech because it concludes it by pretty much summarizes all of the ideas he tried to get across in his speech and shows his hopes for the future.

  23. With deep humility, aware of the adversity we face but confident that, together, we will meet the challenge of our times, I am honored to stand before you as our state’s 58th Governor.

Chaffee believes that if we try to acomplish the difficult set of tasks ahead of us, we must do it together, as one. If we do, then our state will be able to get out of the mess that it is in.

The part "aware of the adversity we face but confident that, together, we will meet the challenge of our times" is where he makes it clear that together we can fix our state up.

  24. I also agree with Daphne, and Jenna that Chaffee is trying to change the way things are done in the U.S. but espcieally in Rhode Island, when he says "I believe a second chance begins at this very moment…. not just for me, but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island and for each and every one of her citizens. Today, I humbly ask each Rhode Islander to join me in embarking on a new era of opportunity for Rhode Island". He recongnizes that things need to change and that politicians really need to start to live up to their word.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with Jenna's opinion on Chafee's quote about indentifying the probem and explaining the problem to help change and better the community.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The last quote that I wouls use is, "In his words, Rhode Island was like a ship of state, with many different types of passengers, free to worship and think as they pleased, but obligated to work to defend the ship from danger, and to follow a correct course to the right destination. Today, I ask all Rhode Islanders…are we willing to re-embrace these principles as our guide in this second decade of the 21st century? I urge your answer to be a resounding “yes!” as we continue in an economy that forces many Rhode Islanders to face extraordinary adversity every day."

I would use this quote because it points out what our community could be if it lived up to its potential. In addition, Chafee motivates the people to make a change and become a "civil state."

  27. If I were a reporter covering Chafee's speech, I would emphasize three main quotes that I feel are important and exemplify the meaning of his speech. These qotes are, "With inspiration from our past, and confidence in our future, let us all walk together, with sure and steadfast steps, toward the promise of tomorrow." I think this quote is important because it it proves that Chafee really wants the best for the state. Another quote that is important is, "Today, I ask all Rhode Islanders to join me in boldly reaffirming Roger Williams’ vision of a “civil state” … a vibrant, diverse community that is free of political, cultural and ethnic division. For if we rekindle the vision that created our heritage, there is nothing this state and her people cannot achieve." This quote is important because it shows that Chafee wants the state to unite. I pledge to devote every ounce of energy I have to this task. Indeed, I will not rest until we reclaim the promise that lay in the heart of our founder Roger Williams some 375 years ago. This last quote proves to society that Chafee is going to help. He made a promise. Not only does he want to help, he will.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with Emma's opinion on how Chafee has set many goals for our state, but he needs to live up to what he says and complete those tasks.

    ReplyDelete
  29. "Rhode Island’s best days are still ahead of us. Let us today begin that journey to a better future." I think this is important because Lincoln is giving the state of Rhode Island hope for better days. Also he is letting the citizens now that he can begin the journey to a better future.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with Jess when she says that the quote, "With inspiration from our past, and confidence in our future, let us all walk together, with sure and steadfast steps, toward the promise of tomorrow." consludes his speech pretty well, identifying all the major points and delivering the message clearly.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with Daryll 100%, and I also think that that quote shows how much Chaffee loves Rhode Island.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure that its good for a govorner to love and praise his state, in Daryll's quote, Chaffee praises Rhode Island.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I also agree with Daryll, how Lincoln Chaffee is saying that Rhode Island is a nice place to live and with the proper politics, Rhode Island can be a great place to live.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "I pledge to devote every ounce of energy I have to this task. Indeed, I will not rest until we reclaim the promise that lay in the heart of our founder Roger Williams some 375 years ago." This I feel is also a very important part to his speech because it sends the message of how committed Chaffee is and how he deserves the position he has earned. It also ties in Rhode Island's history by connecting back to Roger Williams which made the speech very strong.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with Gio, when he says that it is effective that Chafee explains that it is clear we can fix Rhode Island. Some Rhode Islanders have lost hope as they ahve been hit by por economy, but he is doing what he can to improve ourselves.
"And so I say today to every Rhode Islander…the only way we can move forward is to move forward together."

When Chafee says this, he shows that we must move forward as a state. That nothing can imporve without help from everyone, as a group effort.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Jordan, "I believe a second chance begins at this very moment…. not just for me, but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island and for each and every one of her citizens. ". This quote is significant because the governer wants to have a united state and to lift spirits even when times are hard.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "I believe a second chance begins at this moment, not just for me but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island" This shows that he knows we are in bad shape, and that he is going to try and fix it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. "Let me be very clear. Our present condition has not developed overnight. It has been decades in the making and it is the shared legacy of Democrats and Republicans, business and labor, liberals and conservatives. Finger pointing and blame will do nothing to alleviate our situation." I also think this is very important because Lincoln is trying to bring peace between Democrats and Republicans, and that is very important.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Govenor Chafee's message was to identify the problems in the state, and to fix them. He wants to conserve the precedents that were made before. "A civil state gives each able citizen an opportunity to work, build a career or launch a business. We must get Rhode Island working again and together we will." This specific qutoe is a great example of one of Chafee's main goals. Govenor Chafee wants to create a civil society.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with John, that Chafee is trying to change the way Rhode Island handles issues, as well as the way America as a whole deals with problems. I think that, as a reporter, the quote that would best express his feelings toward what he is going to do in office is,"I believe a second chance begins at this very moment…. not just for me, but for our wonderful state of Rhode Island and for each and every one of her citizens. Today, I humbly ask each Rhode Islander to join me in embarking on a new era of opportunity for Rhode Island......I pledge to devote every ounce of energy I have to this task. "

  40. I like the quote Jenna chose. I feel that it pretty much explains everything he was trying to get accross in a unique metaphoric form

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with Jessica becuase it does show how comitted lincoln is

    ReplyDelete
  42. Chafee made promises and in order to be successful, he must follow what he said he would. He must do what he he said he would, to the people, government, and society overall.

    ReplyDelete
  43. If I covering Chaffee's speech, I emphasize on how he made a promise to improve our nation. He pledges to keep his problem, and backs himself up by giving historical context to those before im.
