What i think makes a good editorial cartoon includes, an understanding of what the cartoon is trying to tell us. The reason people make cartoons is to get a point out to all people, but using a more fun way to do it. Some editorials make good points, and teach kids lessons about later on in life. I think there should be more editorial cartoons like that because it's fun but yet, educational. For example, recycling. Some editorial cartoons send out good messages like this one: http://www.gilroydispatch.com/content/img/f244403/cartoon.jpg
I think one of the key assets to editorial cartoons are sarcasm, humor and irony. They point out the ridiculous side of situations and ridicule it. Not only is the point of them to get an opinion or point of view across, but it's also to kind of make light in a situation or portray it in a humorous way to the population.
In order for an editorial cartoon to be effective, it must relate to a well known issue that is controversal. The editorial cartoon should clearly show which side the creater is on. An editorial cartoon is basically a picture that explains how the person that drew that picture feels about a popular subject that many are familiar with.
The editorial cartoon I have selected shows a house on top of a big bomb labled "DEBT". The dialouge in the cartoon says "The president is promising better days." "It's the years that worry me" I think that the person who made this is trying to say that the president at that time was making promises that they could not keep. I also think he was trying to say that sooner or later following this president is going to leave everybody in debt. I think an editorial is about showing the cartoonist's opinion about a certain topic. I think that if the cartoon is going to be successful, the meaning should connect to a lot of people. this aritcle is effective because it balances both and effective meaning, as well as good humor. In this article, the kids going trick-or-treating for Halloween cannot find a house to go to, as all homes on the street have been foreclosed. The cartoonist is showing how the economy is in the dump, and how it effects the holidays. For me, I don't know just how many people will not give candy away on the 31st.
Editorial cartoons are a good way for one to express their feelings, opinions, or point of view on certain issues. In most cases, they have to do with politics, however, not always. The essentials of an effective editorial cartoon are large titles, simple and understandable jokes, quotes, etc. In most cartoons, the illustrator will use sarcasm to get their point across. When the illustrator understands what they are talking about, it is much easier for the reader to comprehend the true topic of the cartoon. Some editorial cartoons and simple, while some are complex. Editorial cartoons are often based on controversial, or known issues. This is not always the case, however, most of the time it is. It really doesn't matter what an editorial cartoon looks like, as long as it expresses the opinion of someone.
I think that the most importnant thing about making a great editorial cartoon is not only being humorous, but you have to make the reader understand what you are trying to make fun of, like kellyn previously said. Many of the editorial cartoons that I read, I didn't understand, so I don't think that could have enjoyed them as much as I would if I knew what the cartoon was portraying. The editorial cartoons that i did understand were very entertaining. I liked reading them better than a regular editorial because they were humorous and fun to read, but you still got to find out about the author's opinion.
I think an editorial cartoon needs to show the artists opinion and be current and factual. But also the editorial cartoons I saw online, most were humorous in some way. They were also easy to understand by the general public. The editorial cartoons were somthing normal people in America/ society could realate to.
What I think makes a good editorial cartoon is that you need to have a point. If you just make pictures with captions that don't make sense, then your "Editorial Cartoon" is nothing more then a comic strip. I think the point of editorial cartoons is to reach people to understand somethings ina fun way
I think that a good editorial cartoon is, somthing that you can understand what the author is trying to say. the reason that people makes these is to try and get there point across.
For an editorial cartoon to be effective, it must be clear as to what it is explaining. I must be clear, but not so obvious to the reader, it must make them think about the meaning. It also has to voice someones opinion about a topic. It must also have some humor to it.
I think that this editorial cartoon is very humoroues, but very true. Editorial cartoons, I think, should be informative, in a humoruoues way. I feel that is the best way to keep readers is to entertain them, with news and humor
I agree with Kaylee, that an editorial must have a clear objective. The opinion of the author must be clearly shown preferably in a creative and perhaps humorous way.
This editorial cartoon is both humorous and effective. It clearly gets the readers opinion across, this opinion being that a majority of moms are relieved when their kids go back to school because they don't have to deal with the constant fighting, yelling, arguing, and just plain annoyance any more. It is funny when the kid is essentially saying when he doesn't do so well on his report card her slight anger towards him will come back.

ReplyDeleteEditorial cartoons are a humorous way to get a point accross. The points are usually valid, despite the fact that they are funny.
